This role focuses on delivering excellence in nursing care across community and acute settings through clinical expertise, role modelling, and leadership. Acting as a resource for Public Health Nursing, the post holder supports and mentors staff, students, and practitioners, fostering education, reflective learning, and professional development. A key responsibility is to enhance the quality of care for children, young people, and families by embedding evidence-based, patient-focused practice and promoting continuous improvement.

Working closely with Health Visitors, School Nurses, Team Leaders, and Governance Leads, the role ensures clinical standards, policies, and NMC requirements are met and regularly reviewed. Duties include coaching staff, supporting action plans, contributing to governance, audits, benchmarking, and assisting in service development and modernisation. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential for engaging with families, addressing sensitive issues with empathy, and maintaining a positive learning environment.

The post holder also ensures safe and effective use of equipment, accurate record keeping, and compliance with safeguarding frameworks. Participation in supervision, appraisals, and ongoing professional development is expected. Overall, the role plays a vital part in staff development, service transformation, and improving patient experience within Childrens Nursing Services.


Main duties of the job

* Deliver excellence in nursing care through clinical expertise and positive role modelling.
* Act as a resource for Public Health Nursing across acute and community settings.
* Support, mentor, coach, and educate staff, students, and registered practitioners.
* Enhance learning environments, ensuring NMC standards on education, development, and assessment are met.
* Work with Health Visitors, School Nurses, Team Leaders, and Governance Leads to maintain and improve clinical standards.
* Promote evidence-based, patient-focused practice and reflective learning.
* Contribute to governance, audits, benchmarking, and clinical effectiveness initiatives.
* Assist in policy implementation, competency reviews, and service development. Provide direct support and coaching to individuals/teams requiring intensive development.
* Help create action plans and objectives for staff with capability issues.
* Communicate effectively with children, young people, and families, offering professional advice with empathy.
* Manage sensitive or challenging situations with strong interpersonal skills. Ensure accurate record keeping, safe use of equipment, and adherence to trust policies.
* Actively engage in personal supervision, appraisal PDR, and ongoing professional development.
* Contribute to the modernisation and transformation of Childrens Nursing Services. Maintain a culture of continuous improvement, safeguarding, and patient-centred care.

Fixed Term 24 months potential for this to become permanent after fixed term period.

* Member of relevant professional body (NMC)


Experience

* Knowledge and experience of working within an community childrens public health nursing service


Knowledge

* Knowledge of local, regional and national policies, practices and procedures e.g. NHS national policies, standards, requirements and directions that relate to Public health nursing and community care
* Knowledge of autonomous practice and the challenges it presents
* Knowledge of quality and service improvement methodologies
* A good understanding of the changing NHS environment


Qualifications

* Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN)
* Recognised teaching and assessing qualification
* Holds a degree in a relevant health related subject
* Evidence of continuous professional development
* Has a train the trainer qualification
