Locum Consultant in Obstetrics
The closing date is 24 April 2026
Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant post in Obstetrics with special interest in High risk Obstetrics and Fetal medicine. This is a fixed term locum post to meet department need with potential of extension as well as leading to a future substantive post.
With an increased requirement for consultant oversight for maternity risk assessment and acute care, the department has made significant improvements in its approach to high‑risk Obstetrics and perinatal feto‑maternal health. There is interest in further training as well as upskilling in subspecialist areas of obstetrics care.
Applicants are expected to have specialist training in fetal medicine and high risk Obstetrics either through the ATSM/SITM route or equivalent such as PG certification. Candidates must have experience in high‑risk pregnancy care including specialist small‑baby clinic and enhanced antenatal care for women with previous pregnancy loss and still birth.
This role is most suitable for candidates with fetal medicine interest and offers an opportunity to build on skills and experience. Applications are also welcome from candidates who have other special interests in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, teaching and leadership that complement the department's needs.
Main duties of the job
Main focus is developing and maintaining fetal medicine and high‑risk obstetric services.
For those who wish to take up a gynaecology component, appropriate clinics can be included within the job plan. Other specialist interest areas within Gynaecology may also be accommodated (Ambulatory Gynaecology, abortion care, colposcopy, menopause care and urogynaecology).
The post includes a non‑resident on‑call element for Obstetrics and, where applicable, for acute Gynaecology. The on‑call commitment involves covering Obstetrics and acute Gynaecology (for those who take up the gynaecology component). Staff will join the existing on‑call consultants on a 1:21 rota for labour ward cover. Resident on‑call coverage is delivered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Job responsibilities
The Women Services Clinical Service Unit offers a wide range of general and special‑interest inpatient and outpatient services. The obstetric service includes 24‑hour maternity triage, labour ward and birth centre. High‑risk clinics address women with diabetes, haematological problems, perinatal mental health, small baby, multiple pregnancy, infectious diseases and epilepsy.
Specialist gynaecological services include outpatient hysteroscopy, colposcopy, cystoscopy, early pregnancy assessment and termination service. All services are delivered at the main hospital except for an outpatient hysteroscopy clinic and bereavement follow‑up clinic at Westwood Park Community Hospital.
The successful candidate is expected to work in the high‑risk obstetrics clinics and the fetal medicine team, providing holistic care for parents and families with fetal abnormalities. The role requires collaboration with the wider multidisciplinary team and contribution to the weekly fetal medicine multidisciplinary team meeting and liaison with the tertiary centre at Leeds Teaching Hospital for ongoing care.
Additional responsibilities include contribution to departmental teaching and training, participation in the monthly fetal medicine governance meeting, and involvement in clinical research and audit.
Applicants must be fully registered with the General Medical Council.
