Overview
Functional Validation Engineer role at SII Group UK. This position supports the testing and validation of satellite systems through simulators and hardware-in-the-loop test benches, ensuring reliable performance from automated test scripting to anomaly management and reporting.
Responsibilities
* Collaborate with the Functional Validation (FV) Architect and Tech Lead to break down tests into manageable parts and ensure efficient implementation.
* Develop Automated Procedures (APs) in Java for execution of tests on Satellite Simulators (SatSims) and hardware-in-the-loop test benches.
* Prepare configuration files and link script execution to these configurations.
* Create step-by-step procedures for running Java scripts.
* Execute validation procedures on Engineering Hardware Model test benches.
* Produce concise and clear test execution reports for sharing across teams.
* Apply CCSDS standards for ground-to-space communication layers (e.g., TC/TM PUS packets, TM frames, TC segments, CLTUs, CLCW).
* Manage anomalies by reporting observations in Jira and investigating issues on SatSims and hardware.
* Identify and report any discrepancies between SatSims and Hardware to improve simulator representativeness.
* Upload test sessions to internal tools and maintain full test traceability.
* Develop offline processing tools to automate manual operations (using Java, Python, etc.).
* Perform base operations with lab equipment such as DC power supplies, RF signal generators, and spectrum analysers.
* Work within Linux OS environments and manage source code/versioning with GIT/SVN.
Skills and Qualifications
* Strong programming skills in Java and scripting experience with Python.
* Experience in hardware-in-the-loop testing and functional validation.
* Knowledge of CCSDS standards and space communications protocols.
* Hands-on experience with electronic test equipment (DC supplies, RF generators, spectrum analysers).
* Proficiency in Linux OS and version control tools (Git, SVN).
* Strong problem-solving and debugging skills for anomaly investigation.
* Excellent communication skills with the ability to produce clear technical reports.
* Ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team.
Experience
* Degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
* Previous experience in the space, aerospace, or defence industry is highly desirable.
* Knowledge of ground-space communication standards and test automation frameworks preferred.
