Overview
The Post is for a Personal Care Assistant. The rate of pay is £14.82 per hour. Permanent full-time and part-time contracts are available. Contracted hours include waking nights, during which you need to stay awake. Shifts can vary and could be any day Monday – Sunday. Daytime hours could occur between 8am and 11pm. Waking night hours are between 11pm and 8am. Four-week rotas are discussed together with me and all the PAs.
Responsibilities
* Medical tasks
o Tracheostomy care.
o Operating ventilators.
o PEG feeding.
o Checking and giving medication.
o Checking and ordering prescriptions and tracheostomy supplies.
* Personal Tasks
o Help me with showering / washing / brushing teeth / brushing hair / shaving / toileting.
o Helping me with dressing and undressing.
o Using a hoist to lift me.
o Help me getting into/out of bed.
o Positioning me in bed or my wheelchair.
o Help with eating, drinking.
* Domestic Tasks
o Making and changing my bed.
o Keeping my bathroom clean.
o Preparing my meals, snacks, and drinks.
o Washing dishes, kitchen equipment etc. used for my meals.
o Washing and drying and ironing my clothes.
o Keeping my bedroom and living clean and tidy.
o Helping me with shopping.
o Help to look after my dog.
o Watering my plants if I have any.
* Social Tasks
o Helping me to go to pubs, cinema, theatre, museums, gigs, and social events with or without friends.
o Help me to attend classes/courses.
o Help while on day trips.
o Help when going out for a walk (roll).
o Shopping for pleasure.
o Help with other leisure activities and hobbies, e.g., using games consoles using my record player.
o Help with correspondence and general admin: phone calls, holding letters for me to read, printing, filling in and copying forms.
o Help me with any voluntary work commitments I might have.
* Transport
o Helping me on public transport.
o Driving my accessible car (if you drive).
o Strapping my wheelchair into my car.
* Other Tasks
o Basic upkeep of my wheelchair, e.g., charging, inflating/deflating cushion.
o Alerting me to faulty equipment or household appliances.
o Pushing my manual wheelchair if my power chair breaks down.
o Any other reasonable task.
What you need
Skills and qualities - superb communication and listening skills; ability to hear what I want and follow instructions precisely. You should be able to work with a growing team providing 24-hour care and operate with high independence and initiative after familiarising with the routine.
Additional information
No fear of the technical stuff: I have a tracheostomy and a PEG tube, but qualified nurses will provide all the certified training you need.
