Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Breast & General Radiology at a 660‑bed acute hospital serving a local population of approximately 400,000. The appointment is made in accordance with the 2003 consultant contract (England).

This is an exciting time to join the Imaging Department at Luton & Dunstable Hospital, which has merged with Bedford Hospital to form the Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The department is rated excellent, well‑led by the CQC and an exemplar unit by GIRFT. It offers a high‑quality, patient‑centred service with a broad range of specialities across the two sites.

The Trust provides hospital services to a growing population of around 700,000 people living across Bedfordshire and the surrounding areas on two busy hospital sites in Bedford and Luton. Travel between sites may be required.

Home‑working is actively supported. All consultants have home reporting equipment including voice‑recognition software.


Main duties of the job

The key tasks for the Consultant in Breast & General Radiology include:

* Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of all patients presenting to the Hospital.
* Delivery of a high‑quality breast and general diagnostic imaging service.
* Sharing responsibility for all patients referred to the Trust with colleagues in the Imaging Department.
* Participation in the delivery of on‑call duties.
* Teaching and training of specialist registrars, junior medical staff, nursing staff, medical students, Clinical Nurse Specialists, radiographers and sonographers.
* Active participation in departmental and Trust matters concerning clinical governance and audit.
* Responsibility for and active participation in continuing professional development (CPD).

Responsibilities are described above. We are looking for a dynamic radiologist with a progressive attitude to support the local breast and chest services.


Person specification


Qualifications

* Medical Degree
* FRCR or equivalent
* MD or equivalent higher degree or evidence of relevant research


Registration

* Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
* Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register: CCT (or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview) or CESR (or within 6 months at time of applying)


Clinical Experience

* Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Breast General Radiology.
* Able to take full and independent responsibility for clinical work and deliver service without direct supervision.
* Excellent all‑round experience of DGH work.
* Experience in other specialist imaging and involvement in other specialist MDTs.


Clinical Effectiveness

* Understanding of clinical governance and ability to demonstrate ongoing CPD.
* Experience of guideline appraisal.
* Participation in relevant local audits.
* Ability to interpret and apply clinical research.
* Participation in relevant national audits.


Personnel Circumstances

* Residence within 10 miles by road or up to thirty minutes travelling time of the hospital for on‑call emergencies.
* Fit to undertake the role with satisfactory Occupational Health clearance.
* Satisfactory DBS clearance.


Teaching

* Knowledge and ability to teach all grades of trainees and medical students.
* Understands learner‑centred teaching.
* Teaching ability and experience in conducting clinical/radiological meetings.
* Has attended Teaching the Teachers or similar course.


Clinical Governance

* Able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the principles and elements of clinical governance.


Personal Skills

* Ability to cooperate in a democratic team environment.
* Flexible attitude, team player with good management skills.
* Leadership skills.

All new staff will be subject to a probationary period covering their first six months in post.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration. This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) submission.
