Job Summary: We are looking for a reliable and hands-on Maintenance Assistant with a broad range of practical skills and minor electrical knowledge to support day-to-day maintenance activities at Goodmayes Hospital. The ideal candidate will be experienced in general maintenance tasks including carpentry, plumbing, and minor electrical work, and will be able to work both independently and as part of a wider engineering team. This role is essential in ensuring a safe, clean, and fully operational environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Key Responsibilities: Perform routine preventative and reactive maintenance across the hospital site, including basic carpentry, plumbing, painting, and minor electrical repairs Carry out minor installations such as replacing light fittings, socket outlets, and other electrical accessories under the supervision or guidance of a qualified electrician Troubleshoot and resolve common building issues, including leaky taps, door repairs, lock maintenance, and fuse replacements Conduct regular inspections of designated areas and report defects or hazards using internal reporting systems Assist senior engineers and technicians during planned maintenance and larger project works Maintain accurate records of completed tasks, time sheets, and maintenance logs Adhere strictly to health and safety regulations, infection control policies, and hospital protocols, particularly in clinical environments Respond promptly and professionally to service requests from hospital staff, ensuring minimal disruption to operations Safely use and maintain tools, equipment, and materials, following organisational procedures Requirements: Minimum of 2 years of experience in building maintenance, handyman services, or a related trade (e.g., carpentry, plumbing, general maintenance) Basic understanding of electrical systems and principles, with demonstrated ability to carry out minor electrical tasks safely Willingness and ability to work at heights and in confined spaces when required Physically able to lift and move equipment and materials (up to 20kg unaided) Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact courteously with hospital staff and patients Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team Valid UK driving licence and access to reliable transport (desirable, subject to operational requirements) GCSEs (or equivalent) including English and Maths; relevant trade certification or NVQ in a building trade is highly desirable Working Environment: This position is based at Goodmayes Hospital, a busy healthcare setting where reliability, professionalism, and adherence to safety standards are paramount.
