Research Programme Manager (Data and AI) – Cancer Research UK (CRUK)

Internal designation: Research Programme Manager (Research Data Strategy)


Role details

* Salary: £46,000 – £54,000 plus benefits
* Reports to: Head of Research Data Strategy
* Directorate: Research & Innovation
* Contract: Permanent and one 12–14 month Fixed Term Contract or Secondment Opportunity
* Hours: Full time 35 hours per week (flexible arrangements considered, e.g., compressed hours)
* Location: Stratford, London – Office-based with high flexibility (1–2 days per week in the office)

What you will be doing

* Support the Head of Research Data Strategy in developing new activities to deliver the ambitions of the Research Data Strategy.
* Deliver the core portfolio of data initiatives, providing leadership for leads of communities of special interest as part of the cancer data network; support delivery of the wider data portfolio across the charity (research operations, policy and influencing, cancer intelligence, partnerships, training, communications, philanthropy, etc.).
* Ensure patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) and equality and diversity are embedded in all decisions, alongside the Public Involvement Lead.
* Deliver an effective governance structure for the Research Data Strategy (internal secretariat and strategic direction for the Steering Committee; external secretariat for the Data Advisory Board) with appropriate reporting metrics.
* Develop understanding of CRUK’s data science portfolio and act as a knowledge advocate for data science across CRUK funding streams; potential opportunity to train for a Data Science Apprenticeship.
* Build and maintain engagement with organisations involved in cancer data science and manage key internal and external stakeholder relationships.


What are we looking for?

* Educated to degree level in a science or health-related discipline, or equivalent experience.
* Experience in a relevant academic, industrial and/or research funding/management setting (e.g., other research charities, research or academic institutes).
* Understanding of the data-driven biomedical research (particularly AI) and funding landscape in the UK.
* Proven track record of leading and delivering multiple complex, multi-stakeholder projects.
* Experience coordinating and influencing senior researchers and other senior stakeholders.
* Experience of matrix management/coordination of teams without direct reports.
* Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders; ability to navigate conflicting needs.
* Ability to develop clarity in complex and shifting circumstances.
* Knowledge of cancer research is beneficial but not essential.
