About us
Hogbens Chartered Surveyors is a family-run, RICS-regulated surveying practice based in Macclesfield, Cheshire. We work with residential and commercial clients across Cheshire, The High Peak, Stockport, South Manchester and the surrounding areas.
Since incorporation in May 2013, Hogbens has grown steadily and has built a strong reputation for technical rigour, personalised service and practical, no-nonsense advice. We provide a range of services including RICS Home Surveys Level 1, 2 and 3, commercial building surveys, roof inspections, project management and specialist property consultancy.
We combine traditional professional standards with modern surveying tools, including drone-assisted inspections where appropriate, to improve accuracy, reporting and client understanding. Our focus is on giving clear, actionable advice that helps clients understand the property they are buying, maintaining or developing.
As the business continues to grow, we are now looking to expand into new areas in a structured and sustainable way. Our immediate focus is on strengthening and developing our presence in Northwich. As the practice grows, we are also looking to develop further opportunities in Stoke-on-Trent, Derby and Sheffield.
We currently have availability for three new surveyors over the next four months.
The role
We are looking for full-time Residential Property Surveyors to join the team and help us grow into new operating areas.
This role would suit someone who wants more than simply a standard surveying position. We are looking for surveyors who would be happy to help establish and develop Hogbens in a new area, supported by an established business, a strong sales team and a clear marketing strategy.
Our intention is to build each area properly, ensuring there is sufficient workload, appropriate operational support and a sustainable working pattern for the surveyor involved.
The role will involve residential surveying work, including RICS Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 surveys. You will inspect a range of residential properties, identify defects and risks, assess repair implications, and provide clear advice to clients in a way that is practical, accessible and commercially sensible.
This is a hybrid role, combining site inspections with report writing from home, our Macclesfield head office, and our Northwich office. We would expect surveyors to be able to attend our head office in Macclesfield when required, particularly for team meetings, training, quality assurance and wider business development. However, where a surveyor is based further away, we would also aim to provide or identify an office location nearby if they prefer not to work from home.
Workload and work-life balance
Our workload is structured around quality rather than quantity.
As a guide, the role is generally based on around five surveys per week. Surveyors who wish to undertake more work may do so, with the opportunity to increase earnings through a bonus structure linked directly to revenue generated. However, we are not looking to overload staff or create a culture where excessive working hours are expected.
We believe a good work-life balance leads to better quality work, better decision-making and better client outcomes. If surveyors are not placed under unnecessary stress, they have the time and headspace to inspect properly, report clearly and provide the standard of advice our clients expect.
We do not expect our surveyors to work outside their normal working hours unless they choose to. Time away from work is important and is respected.
Key responsibilities
About you
We are looking for someone who is technically capable, approachable and genuinely interested in property.
You should have strong building surveying skills, ideally with experience in residential building surveying across a range of property types. You will need to be comfortable inspecting buildings, assessing defects and providing clear professional advice to clients.
Client service is central to how we work. We place strong emphasis on customer relationships, clear communication and understanding each client’s concerns, rather than treating the survey as a purely transactional service. The right person will be able to explain technical issues in a calm, practical and accessible way.
You should also be comfortable with the idea of helping the business grow into new locations. This does not mean you will be expected to generate all of your own work; we have a strong sales team and a clear marketing strategy behind the business. However, you should be willing to represent Hogbens professionally in your area and help build our reputation as the practice expands.
Ideally, you will be MRICS, AssocRICS or FRICS qualified, or working towards RICS status. As a minimum, SAVA qualification will also be considered, provided you have suitable experience and the right approach. Ideally, applicants will ideally have at least 1 year post-qualification experience.
Essential requirements
What we offer
Our approach
At Hogbens, we do not believe surveying should be treated as a purely transactional service. Buying a property can be stressful, and clients need clear advice from someone who understands both the technical issues and the human side of the process.
We are looking for surveyors who take pride in their work, enjoy problem-solving and want to help clients make better-informed decisions. The right person will be relaxed, professional, technically capable and able to build trust through good communication.
As we grow the size of the practice over the next few years, we want to bring in people who can develop with the business and contribute to its future direction.
