Overview
This job reports to the Paint Technician Supervisor, Workshop Controller – in their absence Bodyshop Manager, Assistant Bodyshop Manager. Who reports to this job: Paint / Prep Technician. Working with: MET, Panel Beaters, Apprentices, Parts Advisor, Insurance engineers, Bodyshop estimator and office staff.
Responsibilities
* To ensure the highest standard of repairs are carried out to the manufacturers specification, specifically relating to the paint process
* Receive vehicle, job card & Quality Control (QC) forms from panel shop and check quality of repairs, taking remedial action if necessary
* Ensure that QC form has been completed by Technician who previously worked on vehicle and Senior Technician has countersigned when applicable
* Ensure that all parts have been stripped from vehicle and that it is in an appropriate condition to receive paint treatment
* Document any other vehicle problems noted during repairs and seek guidance from workshop controller/bodyshop estimator if necessary
* When additional parts are required, complete a supplementary form and place in the appropriate tray or give to the workshop controller/bodyshop estimator to gain authorisation and order
* Ensure that vehicle internal car care kit is fitted (seat covers, steering wheel cover and floor mat) to prevent dust transfer
* De-grease the area to be treated; sand down relevant areas and adjoining areas for blending; mask out area to be treated; etch and prime area to be treated
* Bake the vehicle in the oven, set temperature according to vehicle requirements, then carefully remove the vehicle from the oven once cooled
* Demask vehicle; flat the primer to prepare the surface to receive top coat; degrease area to be painted; carefully position vehicle in oven or controlled area and mask for top coat
* Select match and mix colour chips to match vehicle; wear appropriate protective clothing; apply one or more top coats as required
* Bake the vehicle again as required, then carefully remove from oven and de-mask; check final finish and colour match
* Carry out final checks on the vehicle after repair in line with quality control checklist; tick appropriate sections and sign off; review another Technician's work and sign the quality of work for the car to move to the next stage
* Ensure final check sheet and job card leave the department with the vehicle
* Store all adhesives, primers, paints and bonding agents with clear use-by and opened dates
* Participate fully in measurement and feedback processes; complete and return personnel documentation on time and engage in personal training and development opportunities
* Work to support other team members in achievement of their objectives when asked or required by management
Knowledge And Skills Required
* Automotive systems (e.g. basic vehicle layout, function and location of parts)
* Basic knowledge of parts requirements to complete job and the ability to communicate parts requirements via repair orders
* Approved and established procedures for replacing components
* The quality control and inspection requirements of the Bodyshop department
* Manufacturers products and recent improvements through Paint Manufacturers, escribe, technical bulletins, training courses and technical magazines
* In-depth knowledge of manufacturer paint repair processes, paint products, features, use, limitations etc.
* The tools to be used for appropriate operations, together with maintenance procedures
* Protective clothing/footwear/masks to be worn for specific operations
* Safety procedures for all bodyshop equipment
* The use of computer systems for paint mixing
* Manufacturers standards and objectives, retail facility and individuals objectives, both cultural and financial
* The company organisational structure
And Be Able To
* Demonstrate a professional and enthusiastic attitude
* Remain positive in stressful situations and work both independently and as a team
* Record basic information
* Distinguish minor colour discrepancies and differences
* Identify and resolve any paint defects in the paint
* Maintain high levels of housekeeping, mindful of cross contamination
* Ensure that all health and safety / COSHH legislation and internal procedures are followed and environmental best practice is observed
* Ensure the maintenance and security of tools, equipment and other materials
* Help and teach technicians they are in charge of
