If you would like an informal conversation with one of the Care Leadership Team to discuss any role you are interested in, please contact Ros Congden on 01635 244312.

Do you currently work in a children’s home and are unhappy with the long hours and intense shifts?

We are looking for dedicated Senior Childcare Staff to work in our residential houses with our amazing young people, term time only, 8-hour shifts.

About Us:

Mary Hare educates 180 profoundly deaf children at its residential school in Berkshire, and we pride ourselves on our pupils’ achievements at GCSE, A Level as well as B Tech and Vocational Courses. We offer the opportunity to teach highly motivated children, in small classes, where you can make a real difference at this national centre of excellence for deaf education. No knowledge of sign language is required, as we follow an auditory/oral philosophy.

The school offers a holistic approach to care, involving communication with all professionals working within both the senior and primary schools, including teachers, classroom assistants, audiologists, nurses, speech therapists, cochlear implant specialists, social workers, and others. Most importantly, care staff will have good communication links with parents, especially those of their key children.

The Role:

We employ professional care staff to care for children and young people outside the school day. As a residential school, we believe Mary Hare should be a caring community meeting the various needs of the young people in our care. All staff share responsibility for safeguarding, wellbeing, and education of pupils.

Senior Care staff should develop good relationships with pupils, work to create a safe, secure, stimulating environment, and support their learning. They should also prepare young people for their next stage, whether changing residential houses or leaving school.

Senior Care staff must be prepared to undertake shift, sleep-in duties, and weekend work. Additional payment is provided for sleeping-in duties and overtime.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

* Oversee physical and emotional care of pupils, including health, diet, clothing, hygiene, safety, and collaboration with other staff.
* Undertake domestic duties to ensure smooth operation of residential houses.
* Engage young people in conversations, individually or in groups.
* Encourage and stimulate physical, mental, and emotional growth.
* Provide a professional role model, engaging appropriately with young people.
* Maintain regular communication with families and encourage pupils to do the same.
* Ensure accurate documentation of pupils’ progress, with time allocated between 9-10.30 am during shifts.
* Work as a keyworker, conduct one-to-one sessions, and review care plans.
* Communicate effectively with care staff, teaching staff, nurses, specialists, and relevant agencies.
* Follow care policies and procedures.

Person Specification:

* Experience in a care environment.
* Effective communication with young people and professionals.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* Flexible attitude towards work.
* Experience in a school or further/higher education setting.
* English and Maths GCSE or equivalent Level 2 qualification.
* Diploma Level 3 in Childcare.
* Good communication skills with young people and parents/carers.
* Understanding of Safeguarding, Health and Safety, and Data Protection.
* Experience in residential care preferred.

Benefits include: school holidays/term-time only work, free on-site parking, a generous pension scheme, and 24/7 Employee Assistance Program.
