Overview
Graduate Mechanical Engineer at Leonardo – 12/18-month Graduate Programmes with on-site and some remote working. You will work on exciting projects and be supported through your professional development path.
During the programme, you will
 * Support the design and development of electro-optic, communications and information systems products under the guidance of experienced mechanical engineers.
 * Be introduced to state‑of‑the‑art methods, technology and tools to explore all aspects of the engineering lifecycle (requirements analysis, design, implementation, test, build, production and in‑service support).
 * Spend at least three days per week on site to integrate with your team and maximise learning.
The role involves a mix of on‑site and remote working; attendance at the Essex facility is required when Customer requirements dictate.
Key Responsibility Areas
 * Acquire the skills to work effectively within a professional engineering environment.
 * Support the mechanical engineering team in delivering technical solutions that meet customer needs.
 * Create and present design data to departmental best practices and use industry‑leading tool sets.
 * Deliver detailed designs, including numerical calculations and tolerance studies.
 * Produce manufacturing data packs in line with BS8888, including appropriate use of GD&T.
 * Generate piece parts, assemblies and mechanisms within the constraints defined by the mechanical lead.
 * Work to meet cost, schedule and quality demands.
What You Will Bring
 * Entry Requirements
 * Minimum of a 2:2 Bachelor’s/Integrated Master’s degree, or a higher degree (MSc or PhD).
 * For the Graduate Mechanical Engineer role, acceptable degrees are:
 * Mechanical Engineering
 * Aero‑Mechanical Engineering
 * Mechatronics
 * Electro Mechanical
 * Personal Attributes
 * Self‑motivated, willing to take on new challenges and drive continuous development
 * Strong communication skills across written, verbal and digital media
 * Ability to develop effective working relationships with peers and stakeholders
 * Adaptable to changing demands and able to contribute novel ideas for solving problems
 * Demonstrate relevant project work or placements in industry are beneficial but not essential
Security Clearance
This role is subject to pre‑employment screening in line with the UK Government’s Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS). An additional range of security controls (National Security Vetting) may apply, including eligibility requirements for The Security Check (SC) or Developed Vetting (DV).
