The Role

The Student Success Unit is responsible for developing and supporting the delivery of an outstanding and distinctive student experience so that students have a high-quality University experience. As part of Student Success, the Careers Service supports all students and recent graduates towards a positive graduate outcome.


As Information and Insights Adviser, you will be part of a team of colleagues within the Careers Service, collectively responsible for ensuring our current students and recent graduates have access to the best possible information and opportunities to support them in their future employability.

You will work with undergraduate and postgraduate students from across all subject disciplines, as well as recent graduates. You will provide 1:1 careers information and advice to students and graduates to support their progression into the job market, further study and self-employment.

You will work closely with employers and other colleagues within the Careers Service and be both internally and externally facing, carrying out research and accessing information directly from a broad range of industry organisations (employers, business networks, professional bodies etc), to provide insightful information to our current students and recent graduates to support them in their career exploration.

Key Accountabilities

1. Provide information services to current students and recent graduates via a range of different and adaptable methods. This includes in person and online 1:1 interactions, group presentations and workshops, email enquiries, and web-based information and resources
2. Research and provide insightful information to our current students and recent graduates to support them in their career exploration, including the option of self-employment or business start-up. Ensure that information includes global resources and that there is focussed and tailored support for international students
3. In liaison with your manager and team, identify, support and lead on agreed projects that develop and improve our offer to students

4. Work with employers to understand the labour market and in turn, work with them to promote the wide range of opportunities we offer in support of their recruitment needs
5. Work with colleagues across Student Success to ensure design and delivery of our provision considers the needs and requirements of designated groups of students (e.g., students with additional needs, international students, Early Career Researchers, or Degree Apprentices)
6. Maintain a cutting-edge awareness of the student and graduate recruitment process, CVs and application processes and social media developments that offer alternative routes to employment and work experience
7. Develop and regular review of the Careers Service web content. Ensure it is accessible and current, informed by research and employer insights.
8. Recruitment and supervision of assistants/student workers. Acting as a mentor, offering support, feedback and training
Support the Information and Insights Manager to build and maintain relationships with service providers, business networks, funding bodies, businesses, organisations, and other appropriate networksin line with Careers Service and University strategies. Utilise these relationships to gather information and insights to share with students and recent graduates, ensuring that they have access to up-to-date information to support them in exploring career options
9. Ensure that interactions with students, graduates and employers are monitored, documented, and evaluated
10. Undertake any other duties reasonably requested in the delivery of the Careers Service’s strategic objectives including occasional out of hours/evening work

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

11. Experience of providing 1:1 information and advice in a paid or voluntary setting
12. An up-to-date understanding of graduate employability and the graduate recruitment process
13. A good understanding of the HE sector: its business, latest developments and issues
14. Knowledge and understanding of careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG)
15. Excellent research skills
16. Confident in using a range of technology platforms to deliver information and services
17. Ability to write engaging content that adheres to good practice for a range of resources and platforms
18. Ability to devise and deliver interactive sessions for students, graduates and Professional Services Job Description Careers Service staff
19. The ability to network and build effective working relationships
20. Excellent planning and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise a complex workload and working to tight deadlines
21. Attention to detail and the ability to edit and effectively present information
22. Excellent communication skills and a genuine interest in people and their development

29. A degree or equivalent
