Job Summary
Barking Havering and Redbridge University Hospital NHS Trust is a large teaching hospital, boasting over 25,500 surgeries performed annually. We are located on the northeast edge of London and on the borders of rural Essex, making us a bustling hub with a highly diverse population. Our location offers excellent access to London via the Elizabeth Line (trains into London every 10 minutes), and the Essex countryside is only a 20-minute drive away.
The Mayor's London Plan 2021 identified Romford as one of the capital's Opportunity Areas, with potential for large-scale development including new homes, jobs, and infrastructure. Our healthcare team needs to be equally ambitious to meet these challenges. We are a growing Trust and the first in London to be accredited as one of only eight recognised surgical hubs across the UK, meeting the highest standards in clinical and operational practice and committed to delivering faster access to common surgical procedures.
Main duties of the job
Our elective hub at King George Hospital performs planned surgeries exclusively, with dedicated inpatient and critical care beds, allowing operation throughout the year with minimal disruption. The department features two Da Vinci robots and a Mako robot for Orthopaedic surgery. Our Queen's site is a neurosurgical centre, mainly undertaking day-case elective surgeries, and serves as our hot site for CEPOD and trauma cases. Due to our innovative projects, our elective hub has received several HSJ Awards.
We seek highly skilled Consultants in Anaesthesia to join our forward-thinking team. We offer a supportive, stimulating environment for skill and career development, and our Trust provides valuable experience for those aiming to advance in Anaesthetics.
About Us
We are an organisation committed to continuous improvement. We were the most improved Trust in England for A&E performance in 2023/24, are no longer in special measures, and our Chief Executive, Matthew Trainer, was named top CEO by the Health Service Journal. Our staff, over 8,000 from 146 countries, predominantly from black, Asian, and minority ethnic backgrounds, enjoy a diverse work environment. We are a London Living Wage employer, with over 400 staff on apprenticeship programmes.
Our main sites are King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We operate two busy emergency departments, with over 300,000 A&E visits in 2023. Recent developments include new theatres at KGH and Community Diagnostic Centres, along with upcoming electronic patient records to improve patient and staff experience.
