Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and versatile Fixer to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating internal walls, partitions, and ceilings in buildings using plasterboard and various framing systems. The role requires a mix of technical skills, physical fitness, and adherence to safety standards. This role requires a proactive individual with a strong background in multiple trades, capable of working independently or as part of a team to ensure the safety, functionality, and integrity of structures and equipment. The Fixer will utilise a variety of tools and techniques to complete assigned tasks efficiently and to high standards.
Responsibilities
* Reading and Interpreting Plans: Studying building plans, technical drawings, and specifications to determine layout and material requirements.
Required Skills and Qualifications
* Experience: Proven experience in drylining, partitioning, and suspended ceiling systems on commercial or residential projects is often required.
* Technical Knowledge: A strong understanding of building and construction methods, including fire-rated and acoustic systems.
* Skills: Good practical skills, attention to detail, the ability to work well in a team, and problem-solving capabilities.
* Physical Fitness: The role is physically demanding, involving lifting heavy boards, bending, and working at heights from scaffolding or access platforms.
* Certifications: A valid CSCS card (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) is usually a mandatory requirement for working on UK construction sites.
* Tools: Workers are often expected to have their own basic hand and power tools, including drills, saws, and laser measurement tools.
* Measuring and Cutting Materials: Accurately measuring and cutting plasterboard, metal/timber frames, and insulation materials to size using hand and power tools.
* Installing Frameworks: Fixing metal or timber frames (joists, studs, channels) to walls and ceilings that will support the panels.
* Fixing Panels: Attaching plasterboard panels to the frameworks or directly to existing walls using screws, nails, or adhesives.
* Detail Work and Finishing:
* Cutting panels to fit around obstacles like doorways, windows, lights, and other fixtures.
* Sealing joints and gaps with filler, tape, or adhesive to create a seamless surface.
* Applying a thin layer of plaster (skimming) over the joints and boards, and sanding surfaces down for a smooth, decoration-ready finish.
* Insulation and Soundproofing: Installing insulation materials within wall and ceiling cavities for thermal or acoustic performance.
* Safety and Site Management: Maintaining a clean and safe work area, adhering to all health and safety regulations, and safely disposing of waste.
Additional Information:
Dryliners typically work indoors on construction sites, which can be dusty and noisy. The job involves travelling to different sites, with contracts varying in duration. Standard working hours are around 39-44 per week, but evening, weekend, or night work may be necessary for specific projects, such as working in office blocks or shopping malls to avoid business disruptions. We work in Bristol, Bath and the surrounding areas in the South West.
