Our world-leading Time & Frequency department is seeking a Senior Network Engineer with hands-on infrastructure, network design, and implementation experience.
You will be joining our team at an exciting time - we maintain the UK’s National Time Scale, UTC (NPL), and are currently developing a new resilient Time Scale facility that will underpin our Critical National Infrastructure. This will address the risks associated with our dependency on global navigation satellite systems (such as GPS) that are vulnerable to both natural and intentional interference.
You'll enjoy collaborating with prominent Scientists, Engineers, and Specialists in Cyber Security to design and implement network infrastructure supporting time, quality, and cost.
Key responsibilities:
1. Design and Architecture: Develop comprehensive network designs supporting scientific and engineering needs, ensuring robustness, scalability, and security.
2. Build and Specification: Oversee specification, selection, and procurement of networking equipment, ensuring compatibility with existing and future scientific instruments.
3. Configuration and Implementation: Configure and deploy networking solutions, including routers, switches, firewalls, and other devices tailored to project requirements.
4. Security Hygiene: Keep up to date with best practices and collaborate with security specialists.
5. Testing: Execute integration tests, document, and analyze results to identify vulnerabilities and improvements.
6. Troubleshooting and Support: Provide expert troubleshooting for complex network issues to ensure minimal downtime and optimal performance.
7. Collaboration and Leadership: Work with scientific, engineering, and IT leadership to align technology solutions with research objectives. Mentor junior staff and lead by example.
8. Quality Assurance Coordination: Maintain detailed records supporting quality assurance processes.
9. Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with stakeholders to meet and understand networking requirements.
This role offers opportunities to collaborate with subject-matter experts across the business.
