Our world-leading Time & Frequency department is seeking a Senior Network Engineer with hands-on infrastructure, network design, and implementation experience.

You will be joining our team at an exciting time - we maintain the UK’s National Time Scale, UTC (NPL), and are currently developing a new resilient Time Scale facility that will underpin our Critical National Infrastructure. This will address the risks associated with our dependency on global navigation satellite systems (such as GPS) that are vulnerable to both natural and intentional interference.

You'll enjoy collaborating with prominent Scientists, Engineers, and Specialists in Cyber Security to design and implement network infrastructure supporting time, quality, and cost.

Key responsibilities:

1. Design and Architecture: Develop comprehensive network designs supporting scientific and engineering needs, ensuring robustness, scalability, and security.
2. Build and Specification: Oversee specification, selection, and procurement of networking equipment, ensuring compatibility with existing and future scientific instruments.
3. Configuration and Implementation: Configure and deploy networking solutions, including routers, switches, firewalls, and other devices tailored to project requirements.
4. Security Hygiene: Keep up to date with best practices and collaborate with security specialists.
5. Testing: Execute integration tests, document, and analyze results to identify vulnerabilities and improvements.
6. Troubleshooting and Support: Provide expert troubleshooting for complex network issues to ensure minimal downtime and optimal performance.
7. Collaboration and Leadership: Work with scientific, engineering, and IT leadership to align technology solutions with research objectives. Mentor junior staff and lead by example.
8. Quality Assurance Coordination: Maintain detailed records supporting quality assurance processes.
9. Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with stakeholders to meet and understand networking requirements.

This role offers opportunities to collaborate with subject-matter experts across the business.

About You

Essential:

* Hands-on experience installing, testing, and integrating network equipment
* Relevant academic/professional qualifications or equivalent experience
* Experience with IT and network infrastructure (servers, switches, firewalls, WAN, LAN, routers, proxy servers), management software, security tooling, and policy-based processes
* Design and commissioning of systems aligned with standards and certifications
* Cybersecurity practices and technology
* Experience with network monitoring tools
* Knowledge of cloud-native products, virtualization, containerization, and databases
* Excellent communication skills to simplify complex technical concepts
* Proactive team player with a positive attitude in ambiguous situations

Highly desirable:

* Experience with Microsoft Azure DevOps
* Experience with Agile methodologies

Interest in Physics, measurements, and communications is a plus, such as:

* Time and frequency measurement and steering
* Real-time monitoring and control of hardware
* Satellite communication, optical fiber, GNSS systems

Security Clearance: To work at NPL, you need BPSS clearance; for this role, SC clearance with no restrictions is required or the ability to obtain it.

Please note: Applications are reviewed continuously, and the closing date may be moved forward. We encourage early applications.
