Offer description

Overview

The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day management of patients with haematological malignancy on the Haematology Trials Unit. There will be an opportunity to develop research projects in clinical trials and translational science, and training will focus on the design, setting up and execution of clinical research.

Responsibilities

* Inpatient and outpatient care of haematological cancer patients being treated as part of trials performed on the Haematology Trial Unit and selected trials run through the late phase trials team.
* With a dedicated senior clinical-academic mentor, the Advanced fellow will select a major research project question lasting two years. This may include new clinical trial design and development, data analysis of a large database, or a translational project with clinical outcomes in collaboration with a research laboratory or industry. The fellow will present this proposal early in the post to the senior panel, including external advisors, industry colleagues for peer review and evaluation. Smaller projects with discrete and rapid outcomes may also be completed (e.g., descriptive clinical papers). All research findings are expected to be communicated at national and international conferences and published for patients and stakeholders.
* Outstanding clinical contribution is expected: clinical care, clinical decision making, team-based activity and leadership. A fixed timetable of activity will be developed, including multi-disciplinary meetings and clinical practice. All fellows will participate in general oncology and haematology acute services, with management of acute emergencies and treatment-related complications on a rotational basis. Experience in service development of advanced therapies will be encouraged as leadership is an essential component of the training offered.
* Preparation of results for publication.
* The post holders will develop advanced specialist experience in a specific disease site with a focus on advanced cellular and molecular therapies. They will be responsible for day-to-day management of patients receiving advanced medicinal therapies, including cellular therapies and complex combinations. Essential experience in haematology or oncology includes satisfactory clinical specialty training to a senior level, a completed higher research degree (PhD/DPhil) and experience in managing acute complications of advanced treatments. Training will focus on the design, establishment and execution of advanced therapy clinical trials, including grant applications and presentations/publications of research results. The posts are not suitable for support of a higher degree and are focused on advanced clinical experience prior to appointment at Consultant/Clinical Professor/Senior Clinical Research Fellow level. Core medical training for at least 2 years and 3 years of full-time hospital service are expected.
* Demonstrable ability to exercise an immediate level of clinical responsibility as delegated by the consultant-in-charge.
