Overview
Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust are seeking a Consultant Clinical Psychologist (MHSOP Functional Inpatients) to join the inpatient psychology service for Older People. The closing date is 06 November 2025.
We are looking to appoint a highly experienced HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist to join our welcoming and psychologically minded MHSOP Psychology team to provide, develop and lead an inpatient psychological service for Older People.
Main duties of the job
The post is a new one, providing leadership to and management of psychological interventions in the frail functional older adult in-patient service.
The key duties of the job will involve psychological and neuropsychological assessment of complex clients and psychological treatments of clients referred to the service. The postholder also will be responsible for providing highly specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to a service user's formulation, diagnosis and case management plan.
The job will also involve providing professional and clinical supervision to Psychologists working in the MHSOP Psychology service as well as management supervision to other people within the in-patient team. The postholder will also help with the further development of the MHSOP Psychology service by supporting its head in the leadership of the service. Other important duties will involve supporting psychological aspects of service development, evaluation, research and teaching and maintaining standards in supervision and CPD.
This role has a key leadership role both within the team and across the wider psychology professional group. We are therefore seeking a strong leader, who has an extensive clinical skill set, who is passionate about working collaboratively to improve the delivery of care to young people and their families.

Job responsibilities
The main responsibilities of this job involve the leadership of the MHSOP Psychology team for frail functional older adult clients and the development of this new service to improve psychological informed interventions and outcomes for this group of people. The postholder will also be expected to undertake research and audit in this area.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Upper second class Honours degree or higher in Psychology. Graduate basis for Chartership of the British Psychological Society
* Further post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice or research design and analysis
Experience
* Extensive experience of work with people with mental health problems.
* Experience of working in services providing psychotherapeutic and neuropsychological input to Older Adults
* Experience of using computers for data-analysis, especially Excel and SPSS for Windows
* An ability to interact effectively with staff from all disciplines. An ability to interact with clients in a respectful and empathic manner. Ability to work as a member of a team. An interest in working with older adults with mental health problems or neurocognitive conditions. High level of communication skills (written and verbal) including an ability to communicate and work in settings in which the atmosphere may be highly emotive.
* An understanding of the needs and difficulties of older adults with mental health problems and those with cognitive impairment
* Ability to communicate sensitive information to service users, carers and colleagues in a respectful and empathic manner
* Ability to assess complex mental health problems and neurocognitive conditions. Ability to intervene effectively with such clients and plan services for these clients.
* Evidence of leadership experience in a psychological service settings (e.g. supervising psychologists, developing psychological service delivery)
* Experience of working with complex information systems, including reporting data to service leads
* Experience and knowledge of undertaking audit in clinical services.
* Experience of professional and /or line managing services
Qualifications
* HCPC registered as a Clinical / Counselling Psychologist.
* PhD or similar in relevant area.
