Job Summary
Speech and Language Therapist – Learning Disabilities/Mental Health at Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust. Full‑time, permanent position within the pan‑Dorset ID CAMHS service. Base at Seascape, Southbourne with cross‑site duties in Southbourne and Dorchester. Driving licence required; own vehicle to travel to patient homes and community settings.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide direct support to people with learning disabilities, mental health concerns and challenging behaviours.
* Assess, diagnose and manage patients, delivering evidence‑based, person‑centred interventions.
* Conduct SALT communication assessments for CYP with complex presentations.
* Carry out risk assessment, formulation and management for individual clients.
* Work collaboratively with clients’ carers and multidisciplinary team, informing assessments and making recommendations.
* Provide expert advice on communication difficulties to other professions.
Qualifications
* Recognised Speech & Language Therapy Degree or Masters (or equivalent).
* Health Professions Council licence to practice.
* Registered member of the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists.
Essential Experience
* Adapt communication to meet needs of people with communication and intellectual disabilities.
* Knowledge of assessment tools and therapeutic interventions relevant to this client group.
* Assessment and implementation of alternative and augmentative communication (AAC).
* Experience working with autistic individuals, individuals with intellectual disability, and people with challenging behaviour.
* Experience in training other professionals.
* Previous supervisory experience (desired).
Desirable Experience
* Completion of specialist courses related to learning disability, challenging behaviour and/or mental health.
* Experience as a Speech & Language Therapist working with autistic or intellectually disabled individuals.
* Experience training and supervising other professionals.
