Job Summary
We are advertising a fixed‑term, full‑time 10 PA Locum Consultant post in General Paediatrics at University Hospitals Birmingham for a 12‑month period to start as soon as we are able to recruit.
The post is primarily based at Good Hope Hospital, with clinical duties delivered across Good Hope, Birmingham Heartlands and Solihull sites within the Trust. The interim post has arisen due to retirement.
The role provides high‑quality acute assessment, inpatient, neonatal and outpatient services. We particularly seek a colleague with strong General Paediatrics and Neonatal skills and a special interest in Dermatology or Allergy.
Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required
Good Hope Site
* 12‑bed Paediatric Assessment and Inpatient Unit supporting GP referrals and a busy Emergency Department.
* Level 1 Neonatal Unit admitting babies ≥32 weeks gestation, and supporting a maternity service with approximately 4,500 deliveries per year.
* Collaborate with the Level 3 Neonatal Service at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital for preterm infants <32 weeks gestation or requiring intensive care.
* Team of 10 paediatric consultants at GHH, plus wider team at Birmingham Heartlands.
* Full middle‑grade and first‑tier rota providing robust resident support.
Cross‑Site Working
* Collaboration with larger inpatient paediatric unit at Birmingham Heartlands, including the Paediatric High Dependency Unit (HDU).
* Contribute to cross‑site MDT working and specialty care pathways.
Distribution of PAs
* 8.5 PAs for Direct Clinical Care (elective and acute work).
* 1.5 PAs for Supporting Professional Activities (annual appraisal, revalidation, governance, quality improvement, audits).
Clinical Work Responsibilities
* Main base at Good Hope site, with ability to work at other sites as required.
* Out of hours on‑call at Good Hope covering general paediatrics and Level 1 Neonatal unit, approximately 1 in 10 frequency; onsite presence until 20:30 weekdays and 13:00 weekends/bank holidays.
* Consultants work a Consultant‑of‑the‑week pattern; ward work shared across Heartlands and Good Hope sites.
* Outpatient activity at Good Hope, potentially covering Solihull and Heartlands as needed.
* All consultants provide general paediatric services; subspecialty interests in Dermatology and Allergy preferred.
Supporting Professional Responsibilities
* Teaching and training of resident staff, nursing and support staff.
* Participation in regional acute paediatric training (RAPT).
* Research training, including GCP and clinical trial administration.
* Participation in clinical governance activities (audits, investigations).
* Respond to complaints or investigations within the Trust.
* Attend statutory, essential and mandatory training, including child safeguarding.

* MBBS or equivalent.
* MRCPCH or equivalent.
* UK professional registration.

Pay Scheme / Contract Details
* Band: Consultant.
* Salary: £109,725.00 to £145,478.00 yearly (annual).
* Contract: Fixed Term, 12 months.
