Role Purpose:
The post-holder will manage the Crematorium services team at Breakspear Crematorium, ensuring delivery of team plans and performance targets. They will foster a culture of residents-first service and continuous improvement. Additionally, they will oversee the Council's registrars’ function and ensure compliance with 2012 Cemeteries regulations across the Borough.
Job Description
1. Resident & Community Contribution
* Demonstrate understanding of the Council’s Customer Care Standards and ensure these are met to support the vision of putting residents first.
1. People Management
* Responsible for selecting, developing, and managing the performance of the Crematorium team in line with HR policies.
* Maintain effective communication to keep team engaged with the Council’s vision and priorities.
* Supervise and performance manage officers providing crematorium services, ensuring high-quality service delivery.
* Ensure a safe and healthy working environment compliant with the Health & Safety at Work Act (1974).
1. Operational Service Delivery
* Carry out statutory registration duties as required by the Home Office.
* Maintain cremators, plant, and structures, including a maintenance and repair programme.
* Develop and promote services for unattended funerals in collaboration with communications teams.
* Ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and safe working practices.
* Coordinate with the Home Office and statutory bodies on cremation certificates and related matters.
* Liaise with funeral directors, ministers, and service providers.
1. Service Planning & Development
* Develop, communicate, and implement an annual team plan aligned with service goals.
* Establish Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with performance and escalation procedures.
* Maintain a workforce plan, including succession planning for key roles.
* Manage maintenance and repair programmes for facilities and grounds.
1. Financial & Resource Management
* Manage the department/team budget effectively.
* Ensure procurement aligns with corporate guidelines and financial systems.
* Monitor workforce expenditure and use agency contracts for temporary resources.
* Oversee all financial aspects of Breakspear Crematorium.
* Ensure equipment safety and operational standards are maintained.
* Maintain registers, statutory documents, and systems in accordance with legal requirements.
