Job Purpose

The BBC aims to stimulate and delight audiences across the UK with distinctive, creative content. To support this aim, the BBC is entering a new charter period of significant and exciting change, developing novel capabilities in order to define a BBC fit for the next generation.

OUR MISSION is to inform, educate and entertain all audiences, to deliver our public purposes.

OUR AIM is to reinvent the BBC for a new generation

OUR ASPIRATIONS are to achieve world-class creativity, global reach, financial stability, value for everyone, and to make the BBC an even greater place to work

Within the BBC, Data Analysis is a multi-skill function. Variations include working with audience data, production data, financial data and content data. Specific roles can include digital analysis, time series modelling, or real-time analysis (working directly into Editorial teams).

The Principal Analyst is a mid-level role responsible for leading the delivery of large analytics projects aligned with agreed business outcomes. Principal Analysts utilise advanced extraction, manipulation, and analysis skills to identify insights from data. Insights are then translated into clear, actionable reports and visualisations tailored to stakeholder needs.

Principals manage direct stakeholder relationships within their division and often across the wider BBC, proactively scoping project work, shaping solutions, and managing external delivery expectations. Working collaboratively, Principals partner with Lead Analysts or the Head of Data to prioritise workload and balance competing demands, while providing guidance to junior colleagues and potentially holding line management responsibilities.

Role Responsibilities

* Commission, scope, guide and deliver large analytics projects by extracting and analysing data, then presenting findings to stakeholders
* Produce clear visualisations to communicate trends within datasets, extract meaningful insights to help answer business questions, and coach others to do the same
* Deliver analysis to a high degree of accuracy, adhering to quality check and documentation standards
* Help non-data-oriented colleagues understand where analysis can help achieve the strategic goals of the BBC
* Demonstrate awareness of overarching business objectives and prioritise accordingly, adapting flexibly to challenges and opportunities as they arise and directing the team towards the most impactful changes
* Build trusted relationships with senior colleagues across Editorial, Marketing, Product, and other areas, facilitating discussions that lead to balanced solutions, while managing expectations and potentially competing priorities
* Flexibly pivot and adapt communication style depending on the seniority and technical understanding of stakeholders, influencing decisions through trust and credibility
* Help to train and mentor junior analysts in analytics techniques (potentially taking on direct line management responsibility), and elevate the team through coaching and feedback
* Collaborate with other technical teams across the BBC

Are you the right candidates?

Work and tasks are built via direct stakeholder relationships (or occasionally via the line manager) with Principal Analysts often working as the “data expert” within a multi-disciplinary team.

Decision making

* Often acts as the decision maker within a project taking responsibility for an approach and delivery
* Provides technical expertise in the development and implementation of data analysis capability and standards, while promoting best practice standards
* Mostly autonomous in day-to-day work
* Prioritises own work and, where appropriate, the work of junior analysts

Scope

* May have direct line reports
* Mid-level role that provides management of or guidance to a specialist area plus analytical support and delivery
* Indirect budget responsibility by supporting Lead Analysts and the Head of Data in the managing and selecting of suppliers and tooling
* Manages senior stakeholder relationships across multiple areas of the BBC
