We invite applications for the Debt Adviser post from those who share our commitment to supporting the legal and human rights of people whose lives are affected by drug use and drug policy. As a member of our dynamic legal team, based in London, your responsibilities will include:
* Delivering specialist debt advice through direct referrals from our legal team, at drop-ins and outreach, meeting clients where they are—in supported accommodation, day centres, hostels, and in our harm reduction hub.
* Deliver holistic, trauma-informed financial assessments through proactive outreach to people and communities facing financial exclusion.
* Advocate for sustainable debt solutions tailored to each client’s circumstances, including income maximisation, completing debt and mental health evidence documentation, budgeting advice, and resolution of priority and unsecured debts via Debt Relief Orders (DROs), Breathing Space applications, negotiated write-offs, and both formal and informal repayment plans.
* Support people facing multiple, overlapping challenges—including housing insecurity, benefit sanctions, and involvement with the criminal justice system—by facilitating access to holistic, wraparound services. Foster trust and ensure continuity of care through close, coordinated working with legal teams, substance use services, key workers, peer advocates, and mental health professionals.
* Record casework in line with data protection and legal advice quality standards, supporting service monitoring and evaluation
* Identify structural barriers (e.g., discrimination in accessing banking, rent arrears linked to benefit delays) and feed into campaigns or service improvements
Minimum requirements for the post include:
* Ideally, Level 3 Certificate in Money and Debt Advice, the Certificate in Money Advice Practice (CertMAP), or the CMA Award in Generalist Debt Advice. Should you not have these or equivalent certifications the appointee would be supported to achieve a certification within an agreed timeframe.
* A minimum 12 months proven experience of delivering debt advice in community or outreach settings, ideally to marginalised groups
