Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Team MWL as a Medical Engineering Apprentice in our Medical Engineering team based at the Medical Engineering Department based at Southport and Ormskirk Hospitals.

This is a Permanent/ 48 months Fixed‑term training post of 37.5 hours per week, paid under Apprenticeship guidelines. On successful completion of the apprenticeship programme, you will become a Medical Engineer Entry Level on Band 4.

As an apprenticeship this role is supported by an accompanying assessment and skills development programme, during which the post holder will gain the skills and knowledge relevant for this role. Learning will be a mix of in‑the‑workplace, formal on‑and off the job training, and the opportunity to practise new skills in a real work environment. On successful completion of their Apprenticeship, they will have the right knowledge, skills, and behaviours they need for their chosen role.

BD & PS are currently under AfC review and are subject to change.


Main duties of the job

This is a Trainee (Apprentice) role, during which the post holder will be supported to work towards successful completion of:

* An approved Level 4 qualification in Engineering
* Level 4 Medical Engineering Apprentice.

To act as a member of a multi‑disciplinary team of Medical Engineers. Duties include the commissioning, maintenance and repair of medical equipment: including patient monitors, patient therapy and diagnostic equipment.

Providing adult community services for St Helens and a wheelchair service in Chorley, South Ribble, and West Lancashire. Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.

Specialist Regional Services

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key Responsibilities to be gained over the period of the apprenticeship:

* To display a high standard of self‑discipline and attitude to work, in view of the nature of equipment and its location.
* To liaise with other healthcare professionals, clients and external organisations in order to resolve any issues.
* To work unsupervised for long periods, although advice will always be available.
* To be able to plan own workload; carry out acceptance and safety testing of new equipment, repairs and planned preventative maintenance.
* To calibrate medical equipment by using expensive test equipment.
* To be competent in the use of precision and fine tools.
* There is a regular requirement to maintain and repair equipment that is subject to contamination of hazardous substances and body fluids.
* To be aware of cost implication when carrying out repairs and planned preventative maintenance.
* To attend all wards and departments on a regular basis to perform maintenance and where necessary to perform unplanned repairs.
* On occasion there will be a requirement to move heavy medical equipment such as theatre tables, microscopes etc. whilst carrying out repairs or PPM.
* To undertake duties of other staff as necessary.
* To observe guidelines and regulation regarding the safe and satisfactory use of expensive test equipment and tools.
* To work in areas, as necessary, where the Trust currently provides medical equipment support service.


Person specification


Qualifications

* Minimum entry requirement. An approved Level 3 qualification or ONC in engineering- Approved level 4 qualification in engineering can be gained over the period of the apprenticeship. Educated to GCSE Grade C/4 in English and Maths and/or equivalent qualification. For those with an education, health and care plan or legacy statement, the Apprenticeship’s English and maths minimum requirement is Entry Level 3. A British Sign Language (BSL) qualification is equivalent to the English qualification for those whose primary language is BSL.
* Minimum entry requirement Approved Level 3 qualification or ONC in Engineering.
* Qualification to be gained over the period of the apprenticeship: Level 4 Medical Engineering Apprentice.


Knowledge & Experience

* Able to communicate with a range of people, clearly and understood.
* Demonstrate an ability to work as part of a teamwork to achieve a common goal.
* Can plan, organise, and effectively prioritise tasks to achieve the required objectives.
* Can effectively manage own time and activity to meet deadlines.
* Demonstrates an understanding of the NHS.
* Knowledge & Experience to be gained over the period of the apprenticeship: Approved Level 4 qualification or HNC in Engineering Previous experience in the field of engineering.
* Experience in the field of Medical Engineering Example: IT skills with knowledge and experience of Microsoft Office package.


Skills

* Skills to be gained over the period of the apprenticeship: Ability to work on own initiative Ability to prioritise work Good communication skills Good coordination and ability to use fine tools for equipment fabrication/assembly/adjustment Ability to solder/de‑solder equipment parts of a miniature nature Ability to be able to manoeuvre medium/heavy weights (mandatory training provided) Good customer care skills Proficient with IT systems Ability to deal with constantly changing workload and priorities Willingness to learn/attend external courses Ability to handle challenging situations.
* Skills will be gained over the period of the apprenticeship to obtain: Ability to use a wide variety of test equipment relevant to post Knowledge of relevant legislation, COSHH, ISO9000, Health and Safety, QA Systems Understanding of patient/staff risk arising from equipment failures.


Other

* Other will be gained over the period of the apprenticeship to obtain: Ability and willing to work within a flexible work pattern.
* Other will be gained over the period of the apprenticeship to obtain: Full clean driving license.
