Do you want to drive forward the circular economy and influence future waste legislation?

We’re looking for a Senior Advisor to join our Producer Responsibility team to help deliver the Government’s Resources and Waste Strategy.

You’ll work with Environment Agency colleagues, Defra, UK devolved administrations, and industry to deliver significant legislative changes. You can make a difference.

You’ll need to be adaptable, self-motivated, and able to translate policy into action.

Key responsibilities include:

1. Collaborating with stakeholders across government, industry, and the Environment Agency to influence and implement legislation for workstreams such as Packaging and Deposit Return Scheme, along with support for other workstreams as needed.
2. Providing technical advice within the Environment Agency and to industry.
3. Driving reforms in waste management to change how waste is managed in England, working with like-minded colleagues to shape digital systems and policies.

Our team is dispersed, working with various technical and project teams nationwide. We utilize smart tools to stay connected and reduce travel, though some travel and overnight stays may be required.

The team, Producer Responsibility, leads on reforming Waste Regulations to ensure the government’s resource conservation ambitions are achieved.

We promote a positive, inclusive, and supportive culture where everyone feels valued. We leverage evidence, expertise, engagement, and innovation to enhance delivery, influence policy, and secure resources.

Experience and Skills Required

* Ability to work effectively with diverse backgrounds and cultures, encouraging consideration of diversity issues.
* Confidence in negotiating and positively influencing others.
* Ability to build trusting and respectful relationships.
* Risk-based decision-making skills to achieve optimal outcomes.
* Knowledge of environmental legislation, especially waste management laws.
* Drive to innovate and make things happen.
* Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

We offer development opportunities and appropriate training.

Additional Information

You’ll have an inclusive incident management objective in your development plan. We’ll assist you in finding a role that suits your needs, and training will be provided.

The role is flexible/hybrid, with an EA Office base location. Some travel and overnight stays may be required.

Please review the Candidate/Additional Information Pack. For queries, contact roger.thomas@environment-agency.gov.uk.

Applications are assessed blindly via competency questions. Interviews will be conducted via MS Teams within two weeks of the closing date.

Contract Length: 12 months
