Project Engineering Manager – HV Transmission
Contract - Outside of scope of IR35
Location: Manchester
Hybrid: 2 -3 days per week in office
Duration: 12 months
We’re supporting the mobilisation of a major HV transmission programme and are seeking a Project Engineering Manager with recent experience on National Grid substation projects to lead the coordination and delivery of multidisciplinary design through all stages of project development.
This is a pivotal role for a technically experienced and commercially aware professional, capable of overseeing large-scale design packages, managing stakeholders, and driving engineering excellence on complex infrastructure works.
The Role
1. Manage the delivery of multi-disciplinary design across National Grid transmission projects, from bid and FEED through construction
2. Lead internal design teams and third-party consultants to ensure design intent meets technical, safety, commercial, and environmental expectations
3. Oversee subcontractor design packages and manage technical approvals
4. Support and advise on buildability, safety by design, and maintainability
5. Liaise with planning authorities and statutory bodies (e.g. DNOs, utility providers) as required
6. Drive the development and tracking of the design deliverables programme, including gate reviews, change control, and value engineering
7. Lead BIM coordination and data sharing practices in line with client protocols
8. Promote Lean construction principles and ensure lessons learned are captured and shared across the business
9. Monitor and optimise design budgets and resource allocation
10. Serve as the primary liaison between engineering, commercial, and delivery teams—ensuring alignment and clarity at every stage
What You’ll Bring
11. Recent, hands-on experience managing design delivery on National Grid substation or HV transmission projects
12. In-depth understanding of UK transmission regulations, engineering governance, and National Grid standards
13. Demonstrated ability to manage complex technical design scopes and third-party teams across multiple disciplines
14. Strong commercial awareness and experience with design budgeting, risk/value management, and programme tracking
15. Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
16. Working knowledge of BIM standards and digital collaboration tools
17. A strong safety focus with a track record of promoting Safety by Design principles
18. Degree in Electrical, Civil, or relevant engineering discipline; Chartered Engineer status preferred
