About Birmingham City University

BCU is a diverse and inclusive learning community of over 30,000 students from more than 100 countries. We are committed to providing a transformational educational experience, supporting world-class research, and fostering a collaborative and supportive working environment. Our student demographic reflects the rich cultural and ethnic diversity of Birmingham itself, with a significant proportion of students from racially minoritised backgrounds. This diversity is a strength, and it calls for a workforce that is equipped to challenge deficit narratives and thinking — those assumptions that position students from underrepresented groups as lacking rather than recognising their assets and potential.

Role Summary

Our Department is offering two exciting opportunities for children's nurses to join our dynamic team of nursing educators as a part-time assistant lecturer for 30 hours per week. This is maternity cover for a fixed term of 12 months in the Department for Midwifery and Children's Health.

This role will suit a children's nurse with a passion for supporting students and some experience in delivering teaching activities. This is an amazing opportunity to develop your career.

You need to be an experienced Children's nurse, highly motivated and well organised, with excellent communication skills. You will be joining our future-focused, innovative, and creative team. We are motivated by the student experience of learning and teaching, and by student success and are proud to be educating the nurses of the future.

You must hold active registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a Registered Children's Nurse. Previous experience of teaching is desirable; however, we are also keen to support people making a move from clinical practice to nurse education.

The university offers academic and professional development. You will be supported to follow your interests, to bring your clinical experience and creativity to the development of inclusive and engaging teaching approaches, and to work collaboratively with students and stakeholders. We have a proven track record of student satisfaction in teaching and learning, and we are keen to become national leaders in the delivery of undergraduate education for Children's Nurses.
