Job description

At OFG, we work smarter so you can spend more time doing what makes you happy!

How would you like to be paid for five days but only work four*?

Our colleagues’ wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do at OFG, so we’re always looking for new ways to improve everyone’s work/life balance. We’re taking part in a trial of the 4-Day Working Week, meaning that you could be working one day less a week (or equivalent).

4DWW will be rolled out within our school, when we have a full complement of staff, and within the next year – so there’s never been a more exciting time to join us #teamOFG!

Job Title: SEN Food Technology Teacher

Location: Oakham Shires School, Rutland, LE15 6JB

Salary: £30,000 - £38,000 per annum

Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday 08:30 - 16:30

Contract: Permanent, Term Time only

Start date: April 2025

UK applicants only. This role does not offer sponsorship.

As part of our continued growth, we are looking for a SEN Food Technology Teacher to join our team at Oakham Shires School.

About the role

The successful candidate will have experience of closing the gaps for disadvantaged and SEND pupils, supporting autistic teenagers that have struggled throughout their school journey to achieve their academic and life goals.

You will take a creative approach to teaching students according to their educational needs, reviewing and adapting the curriculum to ensure a highly personalised, challenging, engaging, and appropriate Food Technology curriculum is delivered to all students in a way that maximises achievement and ability to develop, and work closely with the SLT and colleagues to ensure compliance with statutory regulations.

Our class groups are small, allowing you to focus on each pupil’s needs; all pupils are treated as individuals. We recognise that one size does not fit all and adapt our teaching to meet individual needs. We are looking for staff with knowledge and understanding of autism and developmental trauma, who can apply that knowledge in all dealings and interactions with the young people we support. We use an “in their own time and space” philosophy to support our pupils to navigate their lives, focusing on understanding behaviour for communication to help support their social and emotional development. We have a strong safeguarding culture, where pupils are listened to, respected, and involved in as many decisions as possible.

We need teachers who have a passion for working with pupils, a compassionate, caring manner, and a mature, non-judgemental approach to life. You will be a clear communicator and resilient.

At Oakham Shires, we have a maximum of 5 pupils per class with adult support, reducing paperwork, and allocating 7 hours per week of non-contact time for training, PPA, meetings, etc. Staff enjoy a cooked lunch with pupils each day and time is set aside to focus on staff wellbeing.

Essential:

* QTS

* Experience teaching Food Technology

This role is not suitable for an ECT.

About the school

Oakham Shires School is an Independent Special School for 11-18 year olds who are Autistic and have associated diagnoses and special education needs. Pupils are taught in small class groups of 4 -5 with a high staff to pupil ratio. Pupils are supported to achieve their Outcomes within their Education Health Care Plan, develop life skills, and achieve accreditations in Maths, English, and Science.

For over 16 years, Options Autism has provided care and education to pupils, young people, and adults with autism, complex needs, and learning difficulties. As part of Outcomes First Group, we are leading our sector in setting and delivering new approaches that provide measurable outcomes for those in our care.
