Purpose of the post

The SEND Cognition & Learning and Communication & Interaction role is a key role of our education support team, working as part of a team, supporting SEND/EHCP needs, providing effective intervention, helping students to access the curriculum, ultimately improving student outcomes for the SEND/EHCP cohorts.

Key Areas

* To safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people.
* To develop and maintain scheme of learning for Literacy, Numeracy, SLCN, ASC and any other required schemes for intervention of students as their needs present.
* To monitor and analyse behavioural data, to inform interventions in a timely manner.
* To contribute to raising standards of achievement for all students.
* To support the welfare and wellbeing of students, contribute to their personal development.
* To enable students to become more independent learners by assisting them to increase their knowledge, understanding and skills.
* To work with all staff to support SEND students by timely assessment, intervention and monitoring for individuals and groups of students.
* To contribute to the SEND strategy, literacy and other appropriate strategies as required & directed by the SENCo.
* To flexibly work across SEND, Pastoral and Curriculum.
* Library and Literacy Development.

Library Specific Duties

* To promote and encourage literacy, study, information and retrieval skills amongst students.
* To be responsible for the efficient and effective systems for operating the issue and distribution of the Library resources and equipment.
* To liaise with staff in order to promote and maintain awareness of the Library and to ensure facilities and materials can satisfy departmental and individual needs.
* To be responsible for the maintenance and accuracy of administration systems relating to the Library to ensure effective management of Library systems and the maintenance of all equipment and stock.
* To be responsible for the management and supervision of students using the Library to ensure students behave appropriately whilst in the Library and in their use of the provisions within the Library.
* Supervise activities in the Library, Internet/ICT clubs and to present to classes and small groups in the Library setting.
* To develop and support study themes and determine the appropriate Library facilities and learning aids in liaison with the appropriate Departmental/Faculty Head.
* To produce literature, posters, organise events, exhibitions, displays etc to promote and maintain awareness of Library facilities.
* Oversee projects directly linked to the Library, such as Reading Leaders and Accelerated Reading.
* Assist to develop and promote the Library whilst ensuring to uphold the practices, procedures and philosophies of the school.

Other Duties

* To specifically support the learning of students with additional needs by working with small groups and individuals under the direction of the leadership team.
* To support students in promoting positive progress in key areas of Cognition & Learning and Communication & Interaction.
* To help develop students' social skills and their independence.
* To provide withdrawal and group support for and contribute to the delivery of the Literacy and Numeracy Strategies.
* To provide feedback to teachers, parents and other professionals as required.
* To work with groups of students, individual students on strategies to raise attainment.
* To make a contribution to the support and inclusion aspirations of the Academy.
* To carry out break and lunch duties (on rota at SEND direction).
* To contribute to creating and maintaining an environment that is conducive to learning.
* Maintain regular contact with families/carers of students receiving support to encourage positive family involvement in the student's learning.
* Be responsible for the planning and implementation of specific intervention groups; e.g. literacy, numeracy, SLCN and ASC.
* Devise, maintain and monitor individual resources to enhance specified student's progress.
* Use of ICT and data to support interventions and casework.
* To work in accordance with all Academy/Trust policies and procedures.
* To have a commitment to self-review and development.
* Any other duties at the reasonable discretion of the Principal or their designate.

As part of your wider duties and responsibilities you are required to promote and actively support the Trusts 'responsibilities towards safeguarding. Safeguarding is about keeping people safe and protecting people from harm, neglect, abuse and injury. It is about creating safe places, being vigilant and doing something about any concerns you might have. It isn't just about the very old and the very young, it is about everyone who may be vulnerable.

To be appraised, supported and line managed by the Assistant Principal.
