Harmeny Education Trust is a charitable organisation providing therapeutic care and education to children who have experienced early years trauma through abuse, neglect and family disruption, referred from all over Scotland. We currently work with children and young people aged 5-18, both on a day and all-year-round residential basis. We have an exciting opportunity for a Child and Family Worker to join our dedicated Education Team to provide care and educational support to a group of children, young people and their families in line with GIRFEC and The Promise. The successful candidate will be expected to implement a range of strategies including, but not limited to, key working and family support work, to enable our young people to reach their full potential. Candidates should have a willingness and ability to work with children who have additional support needs and ideally a qualification relevant to working with children. The post holder will be required to work 39 hours per week. The working pattern for this role is Monday to Thursday: 8:30am to 4:30pm, and Friday: 8:30am to 3:30pm. We are highly committed to the professional development of all our staff, and the successful candidate will access comprehensive training and development opportunities The successful candidate will be appointed on the Harmeny salary scale, at a point between 17 and 20 (£33,743 to £36,729) depending on qualifications and experience. Successful applicants will be required to join Disclosure Scotland’s Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme and register with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC). Closing date: 17 April 2026 Interview date: 27 April 2026 Key Responsibilities Principle Responsibilities: Promote a positive ethos in the school consistent with Harmeny’s vision, purpose and core values. Implement management and Board decisions, consistent with the Harmeny’s strategic plan, cottage development plans, and Harmeny’s policies and procedures. Be an integral part of the Education Team, working with children who attend the school on a daily basis and their families. Develop and implement care plans that address the needs of the young people. Care for the young people’s everyday requirements and help to create a homely, caring and controlled environment for all the young people at the school. Work with families in a systemic way to highlight strengths for the young people and family to reduce barriers to learning and provide a consistent support network to decrease daily challenges. Be a designated keyworker as directed by the Day Service Manager. As designated keyworker, participate in regular reviews and submit written reports on individual children. Attend regular staff and children’s meetings as required. Ensure that all young people’s personal records including case notes, risk assessments and medical information are kept up to date. Be flexible within the timetable and working patterns at the discretion of the Education Management Team. Participate in a structured staff development programme through induction, continuous personal development and regular supervision. Develop and enhance personal performance through supervision and further training, and participate in in-service training and meet all registration requirements. Participate in residential trips and holidays when required. Carry out any other duties consistent with the nature of the post at the discretion of Harmeny’s management team. Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge and Experience Essential: A relevant qualification in Social Care in line with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) registration requirements for Residential Child Care Workers (e.g. HNC, SVQ, etc.). Experience of face to face work with children or young people and their families. Knowledge of child growth and development. Experience of working in a team setting. Good communication skills, both written and oral. Knowledge of child care legislation, policy and procedures. Knowledge and experience of organising and delivering children’s activities. Ability to safely drive children and staff to and from outings, activities and external meetings using fleet vehicles. A commitment to high standards of child care practice. A commitment to Children’s Rights. A willingness to work with children with additional support needs. A willingness to occasionally work a variety of shifts including weekend, evening and holiday working to support our children and young people. Desirable: Experience of working with vulnerable families. Safeguarding knowledge. Knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder and the effects of autism.
