This is an exciting opportunity to join an established and experienced team of specialist consultant Pathologists across the region, responsible for the provision of Cellular Pathology services.
As part of this role you will have clinical, educational and training responsibilities.
You will provide a clinical diagnostic service, which will include responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease, within a multidisciplinary team environment.
You will be involved in training others, in particular trainee pathologists, CESR candidates, and BMS staff.
There has recently been approval and support from 'Welsh assembly government' for an ambitious circa £100 million new build project to amalgamate Hywel Dda and Swansea Bay's Pathology Departments onto a single site along with Swansea University (The ' ARCH' project) to transform Pathology services and create a field leading Centre of Excellence.
This collaborative project between two University Health Boards, along with Swansea University and focuses on health and science working together, to improve the health, wealth and wellbeing of the people of South West Wales and will promote research, training and skills to help deliver, innovation and sustainable employment.
Main duties of the job:
Clinical, Education & Training
1. Provide a clinical diagnostic service that includes responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease, within a multidisciplinary team environment.
2. Provide training for trainee pathologists, CESR candidates and BMS staff.
3. Have responsibility for the safe, efficient and effective functioning of the services in which you work.
4. Contribute to quality improvement and report any concerns relating to patient safety.
5. Participate in the Health Board's risk management process, clinical governance and any other healthcare governance activities.
6. Maintain a licence to practice through revalidation, to undergo satisfactory annual appraisal and to formulate a Personal Development Plan.
7. Participate in personal and professional development to fulfil the Royal College of Pathologists and GMC requirements.
8. Opportunities to become an 'Educational Supervisor' and to develop a specific teaching interest which will be integrated into their job plan, including an honorary clinical lecturer/ associate professor/professorial positions.
The job is based around a standard 10 session job plan, negotiable at job planning.
The Appointee(s) will be based at Glangwili Hospital and, in conjunction with the other Consultant Histopathologist.
Specialty interests are flexible and can be discussed following shortlisting or at interview with the clinical director, Dr John Murphy.

Job responsibilities
The successful candidate for this Consultant post will be eligible to hold an Honorary Academic title at a partner university on the understanding that they will participate in undergraduate teaching, including acting as an examiner, and support and facilitate research activities in an appropriate university faculty and school. They will take direction in these activities via the appropriate academic lead. The agreement to define the Honorary Academic responsibilities and associated programmed activities in relation to teaching time and research will be negotiated jointly between the post holder, the university and the Health Board. It will form part of the successful candidates job plan. The award of the Honorary Academic contract will be dependent upon a formal application being submitted to the university in accordance with the Honorary Appointments procedures and will be available on a fixed term basis subject to satisfactory performance in the academic activity undertaken.
In addition to the above, we offer Commitment awards. These are available to all consultants after three years service at the top of the consultant pay scale, who demonstrate their commitment through satisfactory job plan reviews. They are then eligible at three-yearly intervals, until they have achieved eight award levels. Each level is worth an amount annually which is permanent and superannuable. The award is paid automatically in the absence of an unsatisfactory job plan review, so most consultants should receive commitment awards regularly.
