Group B Strep Support (GBSS) is the UK charity working to prevent life-threatening GBS infections in babies. Our Trustees shape strategy, ensure good governance, financial health, and help us stay true to our mission and make a real impact.
What difference will you make?
Our Trustees play a vital role in shaping the strategic direction of the charity, ensuring it remains true to its mission, well-governed, financially sound, and impactful. You will be part of a committed and collegiate Board, working alongside fellow Trustees, our Clinical Advisory Panel and our Staff Team to uphold GBSS’s values and objectives.
Responsibilities
* Sets and maintains the vision, mission and values.
* Develops strategic direction and longer-term strategies.
* Establishes and monitors policy.
* Ensures compliance with the Governing Document and the law.
* Ensures accountability and that resources are used exclusively in furtherance of GBSS’s objectives.
* Maintains proper fiscal oversight.
* Promotes the charity externally.
* Appoints, supports and monitors the performance of the CEO and Senior Leadership Team.
* Maintains effective Board performance.

Role specifics
Fundraising and income generation: Trustees with fundraising expertise will help GBSS strengthen its financial resilience, identify new funding opportunities, and support the executive team in building long-term relationships with donors, funders and partners. This includes strategic fundraising, donor engagement, grant applications, and income diversification.
Change management: GBSS is entering a period of strategic growth and transformation and works to influence external change in the space that prevents group B Strep infection in babies. Trustees with experience in change management will help guide the charity through this evolving landscape, ensuring that organizational changes are well-planned, inclusive and sustainable.
External and Public Affairs: Trustees with background in communications, public affairs, or campaigning will help shape narratives, engage stakeholders across healthcare and government, and amplify the voices of affected families.
Financial Accounting and Governance: Strong financial oversight is essential. Trustees with experience in financial accounting, charity finance or governance will help ensure financial health and regulatory compliance. We are also seeking a Trustee to take on the role of Secretary to the Board of Trustees, responsible for accurate record-keeping and supporting governance matters.
What will you be doing?
Following a recent skills audit, we are keen to strengthen our Board with individuals who bring expertise in key strategic areas, including fundraising, change management, external/public affairs, financial accounting, and governance. We welcome applications from seasoned professionals or those with transferable experience and a passion for our mission.
Board meetings and eligibility
Our Board typically meets virtually 4 times a year, usually on a Saturday from 9 am until noon. Once a year, the meeting is held in person in central London from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm, including a working lunch. It is expected that the Chair and Trustees attend all four meetings per year.
