Clinical Perfusion Scientist

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Perfusionist within a dynamic forward-thinking Perfusion Department. Manchester Foundation Trust and Wythenshawe Hospital are at the cutting‑edge of cardiac surgery. We provide all aspects of adult cardiac surgery including ventricular assist devices (V.A.D.), heart and lung transplantation and respiratory extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (E.C.M.O.).
This post is at Band 7 so will ideally suit a newly qualified perfusionist or someone with one or two years experience post qualification. The applicant must hold an accreditation with the UK College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists (CCPS). No prior experience of Transplants or ECMO is required as this will be taught in house. The post offers opportunity to gain experience in ‘Perfusion for Transplantation’ ECMO, BIVADs and implantable Heartmate 3.
Main Duties
The main duty of the role is the set up and running of the Heart Lung machine for cardiac surgery. The perfusion department also responsible for the cell salvage machines and intra aortic balloon pumps.
The department uses mechanical circulatory support devices: ventricular assist devices, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, Heartmate 3. Additionally provides a Veno‑Veno Respiratory ECMO service and capacity to retrieve patients from outside units.
Key responsibilities include
* Setting up and operating heart‑lung machines for cardiac surgery
* Operating and managing cell salvage machines, intra‑aortic balloon pumps, and mechanical circulatory support devices
* Participating in transplant and ECMO procedures and training
* Supporting the retrieval of patients from other units
* Working within a multidisciplinary team and ensuring patient safety and care standards
Qualifications, Experience and Skills
* Higher degree in Life Science/Biomedical Science or equivalent (2.1 or above)
* Full UK Driving License
* Solid grounding in Anatomy and Physiology
* Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
* Excellent organisational skills
* Manual dexterity and spatial awareness
* Ability to work efficiently and effectively in stressful and emotive situations for long periods
* Ability to follow complex instructions and make moment‑to‑moment decisions in high‑pressure situations
* Leadership and presentation/teaching skills
* Ability to work on own initiative and communicate with staff of diverse abilities

Salary: £49,387 to £56,515 a year (pro rata)
Contract: Permanent
