Starting from £70k, salary depending on skills and experience Permanent 37 hours per week Location: Hybrid working with a minimum of 3 days a week in-person from Peterborough with occasional travel to our London office and onsite. Anglian Water offers a flexible approach, this role provides you with hybrid working. Your base location will be in our Peterborough office with the expectation of being in the office 3 days a week. Join us as an Environment Lead and help shape one of the UK’s most ambitious water infrastructure programmes. Anglian Water is leading the development of two new reservoirs – in Lincolnshire and the Fens – multi-billion-pound schemes that will secure water supplies across the East of England for generations to come. Together, these projects represent the largest and most complex programme we’ve ever undertaken, with over £500m of development funding secured and future delivery costs expected to exceed £5bn. As Environment Lead, you’ll guide one of these Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) through the Development Consent Order (DCO) process. You’ll lead the environmental assessment programme, shape EIA, HRA, WFD and BNG strategies, and integrate environmental thinking across design, planning, land and stakeholder teams. Most importantly, you’ll ensure we secure a consent that is fundable, constructable, and sets the foundations for long-term sustainable delivery. Key responsibilities include: Leading the environmental assessment programme across Lincolnshire reservoir project. Developing and delivering EIA, HRA, WFD and BNG strategies. Embedding the environment team into wider project teams (design, planning, land, stakeholder engagement). Driving delivery of key outcomes through the pre-application and examination phases. Ensuring compliance with all environmental and regulatory requirements. Building strong relationships with environmental stakeholders to secure agreements needed for DCO consent. What will you be doing? Lead the environmental consenting process for large, complex infrastructure projects through the Development Consent Order (DCO) route. Own and deliver the environmental programme of work, budget, and technical strategies (EIA, HRA, WFD, BNG). Manage multi-disciplinary teams and specialist consultants to produce high-quality environmental assessments and documentation. Ensure environmental considerations are embedded across design, planning, land, and stakeholder engagement. Act as a key liaison with environmental stakeholders, regulators, and the Planning Inspectorate, negotiating agreements and building Statements of Common Ground. Provide expert input at examinations, including acting as an expert witness and coordinating responses to the Examining Authority. Identify, manage, and mitigate environmental risks to ensure timely and successful project delivery. Stay ahead of legislation and regulatory requirements, ensuring compliance and sharing knowledge across the programme. You’ll bring: Proven expertise in Environmental Impact Assessment and related strategies (EIA, HRA, WFD, BNG). Strong leadership skills with the ability to guide multi-disciplinary teams and manage specialist consultants. Confidence in engaging with regulators, stakeholders, and the Planning Inspectorate, including negotiation and agreement building. Excellent communication skills, able to translate complex environmental issues into clear, actionable advice. A proactive, solutions-focused approach to managing risk, resolving challenges, and driving delivery. The credibility to act as an expert witness and represent the project at examination. You’ll be motivated by the scale and importance of these nationally significant projects and passionate about balancing vital water supply needs with environmental sustainability. Key Skills and Experience: Experience of leading and managing EIA/environmental aspects of planning consents for a major infrastructure project/programme, ideally playing a lead role in an NSIP DCO Knowledge/experience of NSIP Development Consent Orders and associated planning frameworks, and sound understanding of relevant legislation. Relevant professional qualification(s) – likely environmentally based Why Apply?
