Do you want to be a part of a team designing the next generation of IR Sensors for space and defence sectors?

At Leonardo, we are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to work in the field of Infra-Red Sensors, utilized by NASA, ESA, and various defence programmes.

This role involves working across the entire engineering lifecycle, including concept design, development model builds, production support, and beyond.

The IR Detectors Team is based at our Southampton facility, offering a mix of on-site and remote working.

All Mechanical Engineering team members are encouraged to develop their skills, including structural, thermal, and model-driven engineering aspects.

The Southampton team is part of the Integrated Sensing and Protection (ISP) Team, which has multiple sites across the UK with technical and training support.


Key Responsibilities

1. Ensure compliance of mechanical engineering solutions throughout the engineering lifecycle, considering quality, safety, and reliability.
2. Research and develop mechanical solutions for the next generation of IR detectors.
3. Support programme delivery with analytical and practical mechanical solutions.
4. Create mechanical designs adhering to industry standards.
5. Use 3D CAD tools for mechanical design and development.
6. Participate in practical implementation, development builds, and design of experiments.
7. Support procurement and manufacturing during new product introduction.
8. Manage work packages to meet quality, schedule, and cost targets.


Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge

1. Degree in Mechanical Engineering (upper second class or higher), or equivalent experience in a regulated industry.
2. Proficiency with 3D CAD software (preferably PTC Creo).
3. Structured problem-solving skills.
4. Experience with detailed mechanical design, calculations, and tolerance analysis.
5. Knowledge of BS8888 standards and GD&T.
6. Understanding of DFM/A principles.
7. Ability to work within multidisciplinary teams to meet targets.
8. MEng in Mechanical Engineering preferred.
9. Experience in space, defence, or medical sectors.
10. Knowledge of vacuum assemblies and optical assemblies.
11. Experience in designing electro-mechanical products for harsh environments, including EMC considerations.
12. Familiarity with thermal and mechanical analysis tools like PTC Creo Simulate.
13. Awareness of current trends and technologies in mechanical engineering.
14. Experience in designing tools, fixtures, and vibration test fixtures.
