Job overview
The Stroke Unit at Princess Royal University Hospital is one of eight large Hyper Acute Stroke Centres within the Pan London Stroke Network. It provides emergency stroke services to a diverse local community as well as expert clinical care for both regional and local stroke patients. The service is continually expanding and developing, offering new and exciting career opportunities.
The services provided include the TIA Clinic, Hyper Acute Stroke care, and Acute Stroke Rehabilitation. This is a strong clinical specialty supported by a dedicated nursing and clinical team committed to high standards of care and a supportive environment, making it a compelling career choice for ambitious nurses.
The team also has a strong multidisciplinary focus. The successful candidate will need to work collaboratively across professions and engage closely with the team to achieve the best possible outcomes for the patient group.
The post holder must be a registered nurse (RN) and is therefore bound by the NMC Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses, Midwives, and Health Visitors.
Main duties of the job
Maintain a high standard of clinical practice when carrying out nursing procedures, demonstrating evidence-based care for all patients receiving treatment both on the ward and during assessments in A&E. Accurately assimilate and interpret clinical information regarding the patient’s condition, promptly report any changes, and initiate appropriate remedial actions.
Be responsible for the safe custody, checking, and administration of medication. Ensure compliance with our clinical governance framework by motivating colleagues, championing patient safety and dignity, and driving continuous improvement.
Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team (MDT) in the assessment and treatment of all patients admitted to the unit. Act as a resource for junior nurses, patients, and their relatives. Ensure accurate and up-to-date records are maintained, reflecting changes in the patient’s condition, treatments delivered, and communications with patients, families, and the MDT.
Actively participate in teaching, training, and mentoring junior nurses on the ward. Deputize for the ward manager to ensure appropriate staffing levels, delivery of high standards of care at all times, timely management of patient flow, and adequate stock levels.
