Overview
Birmingham City Council is seeking a committed and experienced Senior Practitioner AMHP to lead our citywide daytime Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) service. This is a pivotal role in one of the UK’s largest and most diverse local authorities, offering the chance to make a real difference in the lives of residents experiencing mental health crises.
Working arrangements
Permanent, full-time role. 36.5 hours per week. Grade 5 - £42,839 - £51,356. Consultation grade - subject to formal evaluation under the Pay Equity Review.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead and manage a team of AMHPs delivering statutory duties under the Mental Health Act
* Management of all S.13 requests that come through to the daytime AMHP service
* Oversee complex assessments and ensure timely, safe interventions
* Provide expert supervision, guidance, and support to practitioners
* Collaborate with health, police, and voluntary sector partners across Birmingham
* Drive service development, quality assurance, and workforce planning
* Assist Team Manager in planning and delivery of AMHP forums
* Assist Team Manager in planning and delivery of pre-AMHP course
What We’re Looking For
* Qualified Social Worker with current AMHP status
* Proven leadership experience in mental health or crisis intervention
* Strong understanding of safeguarding, risk management, and legal frameworks
* Commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally competent practice
* Passion for improving outcomes for vulnerable individuals and communities
* A creative thinker who can generate fresh ideas and challenge conventional approaches
* Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to analyse complex issues and develop effective solutions
