The General Surgical Directorate is seeking a new full-time consultant within the Emergency General Surgery unit. This is an additional post. The successful applicant would join a team of sixteen gastrointestinal surgeons.
Applicants would be expected to have a broad training in general and laparoscopic surgery.
Applicants with experience in complex biliary work, point of care ultrasound or an interest in Major Trauma systems would be at an advantage.
A candidate who is unable for personal reasons to undertake the duties of a whole-time post will receive equal consideration. If such a candidate is appointed the job content will be modified as appropriate in consultation with consultant colleagues and local management.

Main duties of the job
With the appointment of this post it is anticipated the emergency surgeons will undertake the following duties between them:
1. Responsibility for the general surgical emergency Front Door Mon-Thur 0900-1700
2. Admission and management of all general surgical emergency admissions Mon-Fri when fully staffed.
3. Cover for the three hot gallbladder lists each week
4. Participation in the on-call rota 1:16 0800-1300 (next day)
5. An elective subspeciality of their choice
The appointment is to the Trust, not to specific hospitals.
All consultants, including the appointee, will be expected to be involved in implementing the Trust's Clinical Governance program. This includes active participation in clinical audit, quality, clinical guidelines/pathways, professional development, appraisal and risk management.
The appointee will be a member of the Consultant Staff Committee and be expected to serve on this committee.
