Job Description
Our client, a respected partner of the UK Ministry of Defence, is seeking an experienced Materials & Process Laboratory Engineer. The primary responsibility of this role is to understand the technology of materials and their related manufacturing processes. This expertise is essential to ensure that our products meet rigorous technical, cost, and reliability standards.
Key Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will provide technical guidance in selecting and characterising materials and related processes for all client projects. They will also assess and develop new technologies, offering consultancy services for the Government and the Ministry of Defence. Additionally, the candidate will work within the Materials team, which consists of a federated UK/France integrated team based in Mechanical Engineering. This team operates with a common process set and maintains links to other materials teams across the business.
We have a wide range of test facilities and specialist knowledge within materials used across the business. The Materials group supports all areas of the business in matters related to materials and processes, with expertise in metallic, non-metallic, composite, and other areas of materials science.
We achieve this by:
* Providing technical guidance and approval in the selection, characterisation, and use of materials and related processes across all projects.
* Offering consultancy services for materials and processes to the Government and Ministry of Defence.
* Representing the organisation on international, government, MoD, trade bodies, strategic steering bodies, and standard committees.
* Supporting adherence to REACH and RoHS regulations.
* Serving as the first point of contact for failure investigations and forensic engineering.
* Offering guidance on the use and control of hazardous materials.
What do you need?:
* Conduct comprehensive assessments of materials and related processes.
* Utilise general lab equipment, with optional experience in XRF, FTIR, SEM, and EDX.
* Prepare detailed reports and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
* Support all aspects of the materials lab, including failure investigations and materials selection.
* Assist in generating or assessing compliance data for REACh, RoHS, or environmental aspects of engineering designs.
Additional Skill-set/experience required:
* Extensive experience in manufacturing laboratory environments.
* Proficient in assessing materials and components according to established international standards, including DEF STANs.
* Skilled in supporting the selection, procurement, and manufacturing of engineering parts and components.
* In-depth knowledge of non-metallic material production and processing, including paints and adhesives.
