About the Opportunity
We are seeking a practical, technically minded and safety‑driven BA Maintenance Technician to join our specialist Breathing Apparatus Maintenance Department. In this vital role, you will test, maintain and repair a wide range of operational equipment that supports firefighter safety and operational response across the Service.
The post involves working with Breathing Apparatus, Gas Tight Suits, Working at Height equipment, Defibrillators, Life Jackets, Gas Monitoring equipment, Air Lifting Units, Lighting and other associated assets. This role ensures that operational crews are equipped with safe, reliable, and fully compliant equipment at all times.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
1. Test, maintain and repair Breathing Apparatus and associated equipment.
2. Carry out Air Purity testing on breathing air compressors across the county in accordance with EN regulations.
3. Inspect and complete minor repairs on BA cylinders and valves.
4. Carry out Face Fit testing for a diverse workforce.
5. Service and repair air regulators used within Air Lifting Units and inflatable structures.
6. Test, service and calibrate Gas Monitoring equipment.
7. Test and repair boats and inflatable walkways.
8. Inspect, test and maintain Life Jackets, Working at Height equipment, Defibrillators, Gas Tight Suits and related kit.
9. Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records of all tests completed.
10. Monitor incoming online fault requests, add them to the work log, and close tasks upon completion.
About You
You will be hands‑on, safety‑conscious, and technically capable, with the ability to work independently while contributing positively to a small specialist team.
You will also demonstrate the Service’s values, act with integrity, and support a safe, inclusive and professional working environment.
Essential Criteria:
11. Willingness to undertake training from various suppliers to acquire the skills required for maintaining BA equipment.
12. On‑the‑job training or experience relevant to equipment maintenance.
13. Current driving licence.
14. Ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
15. Ability to work on own initiative without direct supervision.
16. IT literate, including experience with Word, Excel and databases.
Desirable:
17. Previous technical training or knowledge related to equipment managed by BA Maintenance.
18. Knowledge of health and safety legislation and/or a background in engineering.
19. Physically fit and comfortable working in enclosed spaces.
Hours and Working Pattern
20. Core hours: 37 hours per week (Monday to Friday)
