Design Manager (Geotechnical / Structural)
This challenging and exciting opportunity requires an individual with a strong technical background and demonstrable experience managing the holistic design process from within the geotechnical or structural engineering sector. 7‑10+ years of relevant design experience is required, with remote working available and occasional on‑site presence to diagnose issues as they arise.
Our client, a leading specialist contractor in the UK, seeks a Design Manager focused on accurately diagnosing subsidence—both structurally and geotechnically—and creating technically correct solutions. You will review and assess scheme feasibility, produce innovative and bespoke designs, perform design checking and approval, ensure quality assurance of all designs, and advise the operations department on general engineering matters.
The Role
* Visit sites online (80%) and in person (20%) to diagnose structural, subsidence and geotechnical problems and devise the most appropriate design solutions.
* Provide technical support and training to Area Sales Managers to enable accurate problem diagnosis.
* Engage customers proactively to develop feasibility schemes and design suitable repair solutions for assets, structures, infrastructure, or buildings affected by subsidence.
* Check internal designs against company guidelines.
* Approve proposal quality in line with company guidelines.
* Sign off Certificates of Structural Adequacy.
* Collaborate with operations to assess how designs perform on site.
* Supervise retreatment works on site.
* Reduce aborted works and complaints related to design issues, and decrease rejected proposals caused by incorrect diagnoses or proposals.
The Person
* Educated to degree standard in Civil, Geotechnical or Structural Engineering.
* Track record of producing geotechnical and structural design solutions.
* Solid industry software and IT skills across multiple platforms.
* Experience in retaining wall analysis and design; member of ICE or IStructE.
* 7‑10 years experience covering a variety of project sizes and complexities.
* Background from a contracting or consulting business with structural and foundation engineering experience.
* Experience dealing directly with customers and internal stakeholders.
* Comprehensive knowledge of various geotechnical and structural techniques and designs.
* Passion for geotechnical and structural engineering technical design excellence.
* Hands‑on individual accustomed to fast‑paced, changing environments.
* Ability to work under pressure and deliver solutions swiftly.
* Willingness to carry out virtual site inspections to diagnose problems and propose solutions.
