A Vacancy at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust.

A exciting opportunity has arisen to join our established, friendly and dynamic clinical pharmacy team at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire.

This post is for an experienced and adaptable Specialist Pharmacist to support the Emergency Department, working closely with the Lead Pharmacist and pharmacy technicians to deliver safe, effective and high quality care across front‑door services.

Key responsibilities include medication reconciliation, optimisation of drug therapies, and providing clinical input to multidisciplinary teams. The postholder will deliver cost‑effective, patient‑centred clinical pharmacy service through efficient medication supply, prescription monitoring and safe prescribing practices. The role also involves providing expert pharmaceutical advice and support to Acute Medicines Services including Acute Medical wards, the Medical Assessment Unit, SDEC and Acute Frailty Unit.

The ideal candidate will hold an equivalent Pharmacy degree, have experience working in an acute setting, possess excellent clinical and problem‑solving skills, and show a strong and clear commitment to patient safety and high‑quality care.


Responsibilities

* Deliver a high‑quality, patient‑centred clinical pharmacy service to the Emergency Department and other front‑door areas.
* Undertake timely and accurate medicine reconciliation, optimise medicines use, and contribute to safe and effective prescribing practices.
* Provide evaluated drug information and evidence‑based recommendations to medical and nursing staff.
* Contribute to the development and review of clinical guidelines, policies, patient group directives and shared‑care protocols.
* Participate in and deliver education and training for pharmacy staff and wider multidisciplinary teams.
* Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement projects and practice research under the guidance of senior/lead pharmacists.
* Monitor drug expenditure and advise on financial impact of prescribing decisions and service changes.
* Act as a role model, providing training, supervision and support to pharmacists, technicians and trainees within the specialty.
* Work closely with community healthcare teams (PCNs, community pharmacies, mental health teams) to support smooth transitions of care and continuity of medicines management.
* Lead on medicines management and optimisation initiatives within Emergency and Acute areas.
* Provide clinical pharmacy and prescribing services within other designated areas, if needed.
* Work flexibly across all of the Pharmacy departments, covering the work of colleagues during peak periods or absence.
* Work alongside lead/senior pharmacists and ED/ admissions ward‑based pharmacy technicians to provide a comprehensive clinical pharmacy service across the Emergency Department and Admissions Services.
* Act as the specialist pharmacy contact for emergency care, providing expert advice to nursing and medical staff on medicines‑related decision making and supporting safe, effective prescribing and administration within ED following departmental and Trust policies and procedures.
* Provide expert advice to patients, carers and healthcare professionals on medicines use in emergency care, including high risk medicines, complex co‑morbidities and time‑critical medicines.
* Ensure effective medicine optimisation and management, including audit work, guidelines and policy development, attendance of meetings and education and training of pharmacy and ward staff.
* Support risk management activities within ED/ Acute footprint, including incident learning, engaging in multidisciplinary work and the delivery of quality improvement programmes related to prescribing, supply, storage and administration of medicines.
* Provide supervision and management support to junior and rotational staff within the area, including mentoring, competency development, and contribution to appraisals as required.
* Provide cross cover for other specialist pharmacists within specialist rotations as well as the Acute and Emergency care footprint to ensure continuity of service and appropriate escalation.
* Support the training, development and supervision of pharmacy staff and learners within the service, acting as practice/ designated supervisors/mentor/assessor/Designated Prescribing Practitioner where appropriate and contributing to competency‑based development.
* Undertake prescribing responsibilities as an independent prescriber in line with the Trust’s Universal Scope of Practice for Pharmacist Independent Prescribing, Standard Operating Procedures and Clinical Guidelines, or within a defined specialist prescribing scope formally approved through the Medicines Policy and Practice Committee, ensuring safe and effective prescribing practice at all times.


Qualifications and Availability

The role is offered on a full‑time basis. You will be based at University Hospital Coventry, a PFI hospital which is situated just off the junction M6 and M69.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.
