Job overview

The post holder will by provide specialist psychological assessments and interventions in the Talking Therapies primary care service, seeing people aged over 18 with mild to moderate psychological distress of some complexity. The post holder will also be engaged in the clinical supervision and line management of others, clinically relevant research and in indirect work, such as service development and planning.

Main duties of the job

To oversee the running of the PWP team.

To offer Line management for Senior PWP team.

To offer case management and line management to other PWP members.

To liaise with senior management team with regular updates.

To adhere to service key performance indicators.

To attend regular service meetings.

To carry a caseload for clients presenting with common mental health difficulties offering evidence based interventions.

This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (with a minimum of £4,313 to a maximum of £5,436 pro rata for part time).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical & General

1. Accept referrals via agreed protocols within the service and develop programmes of care packages.

2. Assess and support people with a common mental health problem in the self-management of their recovery.

3. Undertake patient-centred interviews which identifies areas where the person wishes to see change and/or recovery and make an accurate assessment of risk to self and others.


4. Make decisions on suitability of new referrals, adhering to the department’s referral protocols, refer unsuitable clients on to the relevant service or back to the referral agent as necessary or steps-up the person’s treatment to high intensity psychological therapy.


5. Provide a range of information and support for evidence based high-volume low-intensity psychological treatments. This may include guided self-help computerised CBT, information about pharmacological treatments. This work may be face to face, telephone or via other media.

6. Educate and involve family members and others in treatment as necessary.

7. Adhere to an agreed activity contract relating to the overall number of client contacts offered, and clinical sessions carried out per week in order to minimise waiting times and ensure treatment delivery remains accessible and convenient.


8. Attend multi-disciplinary meetings relating to referrals or clients in treatment, where appropriate.

9. Complete all requirements relating to data collection within the service.

10. Keep coherent records of all clinical activity in line with service protocols and use these records and clinical outcome data in clinical decision making.

11. Work closely with other members of the team ensuring appropriate step-up and step-down arrangements are in place to maintain a stepped care approach.

12. Assess and integrate issues surrounding work and employment into the overall therapy process.

13. Operate at all times from an inclusive values base which promotes recovery and recognises and respects diversity.

14. Prepare and present clinical information for all patients on their caseload to clinical case management supervisors within the service on an agreed and scheduled basis, in order to ensure safe practice and the clinical governance obligations of the worker, supervisor and service are delivered.

15. Respond to and implement supervision suggestions by supervisors in clinical practice.

16. Engage in and respond to personal development supervision to improve competences and clinical practice.

17. Lead on PWP outreach programme.

Management

1. To provide leadership and line management for Senior PWPs and PWPs in Waltham Fores Talking Therapies. This will include day-to-day guidance and support of the PWP team, management supervision, sickness absence and performance management, and monitoring the PWP aspect of service delivery.

2. To provide clinical leadership to the PWP Team, referring any complex clinical issues to Service Manager and/or Clinical Lead.

3. Ensure that the PWP team maintain appropriate clinical records in keeping with service operational policy.

4. Ensure that the PWP team maintain outcome data as per service operational policy.

5. Ensure that the PWP team participate in setting and review of objectives for their post on an annual basis.

6. Ensure that the PWP team participate in activities of ‘continuing professional development’ (CPD) on an annual basis.

7. Participate in audits of clinical activity and evaluative research as required.

8. Manage an aspect of the service at the level of direct service delivery. This might include one or more (depending on available time) of: co-ordinating psycho-educational material, keeping a central resource file of clinical resources for general use, acting as the key liaison with an identified group of professionals/ organisation, for local voluntary organisations, GP surgeries, employment.

9. To seek opportunities to influence policy development through clear articulation of service user and service needs.

10. To create an environment where staff see change as an essential element of healthcare, demonstrated through quick and positive response in the face of the need to change.

11. To act as an effective role model to create a positive impression of primary care mental health across a variety of arenas. Is an advocate for the integrity of the service across a variety of arenas, whilst seeking to create stronger alliances within the NHS, Social Care, Voluntary Sector, and service user and carer agencies.

Administration/IT

1.To attend team and psychology business meetings regularly.

2.To develop and facilitate effective means of disseminating relevant information to colleagues.

3.To keep accurate and up to date case notes, information and other documentation in accordance both with the teams’ operational policies and the Trust’s policies and procedures.

4.To make such records available for clinical, statistical and financial purposes, observing the Trust and BPS Professional Practice Guidelines on client confidentiality.

1. To participate in Trust audit procedures as appropriate.
2. To keep up to date and accurate work activity figures and to make these available to the appropriate departments.
3. To work with the team to manage and develop the procedures for referrals and caseload management.
4. To produce relevant information for colleagues and clients on psychology and services offered.
5. To keep accurate official car mileages figures and submit these regularly.

Communication

1.To liaise with colleagues in Social, Health, Education, Heritage, Library, and Leisure Services to support the clients in furthering plans for their own personal development.

2.To investigate methods of improving the mental health knowledge and skills of other agencies such as consultancy, teaching and advice.

3.To work alongside other agencies to help break down issues of stigma and prejudice that confront the client group, improve public awareness of mental health issues and promote positive images of mental health services.

4.To support the team in developing a high profile for the service through events and activities held throughout the local community.

Training

1.To make a significant contribution to the team’s professional development by providing teaching in various appropriate areas of clinical skills and knowledge as identified in the service’s business and training plans.

2.To participate in the development of teaching programmes and in the development of innovative and effective teaching methods.

3.To attend teaching events within and outside the Trust that lie within the areas specified in business and personal development plans

4.To disseminate developments of good practice within the team, the psychology service and throughout the Trust as appropriate

5.To attend regular clinical supervision to maintain skills as a reflective practitioner, develop and focus practice and share ideas about therapeutic work

6.To provide clinical and management supervision to members of the PWP team.

Personal Development

1. To maintain high professional standards by attending relevant teaching/training events within and outside the Trust, as agreed with the manager and clinical lead, and as part of a PDP and appraisal process.

2.To meet with the clinical lead, or an appropriately designated psychologist, for the purposes of professional support, career development and service planning.

3.To attend an annual appraisal with the manager and clinical lead for the purpose of review, KSF development, and PDP.

4.To attend team and service development events.

Professional Standards

1.To abide by the BABCP/BPS Code of Conduct and the DCP/DCoP Professional Practice Guidelines.

2.To work to a set of objectives based upon a personal appraisal agreed with the manager and clinical lead.

3.To participate in relevant training programmes and other events within and outside the Trust to keep up to date with current clinical, service and professional thinking and practice.

4.To meet with the manager on a regular basis for the monitoring and development of administrative matters, including caseload management and the day-to-day running of the service.

5.To attend relevant service, psychology and Trust business meetings as well as those organised by other agencies, where appropriate.
