Overview
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF FLEET ( Full Time)
Under general direction of the Director of Facilities & Fleet. Manage Municipal Garage and vehicle and equipment maintenance, inventory/warehouse function, and Municipal Service Center facility and fenced premises. Acts in the capacity of the Director of Facilities & Fleet in his absence. Plans and manages the Fleet Capital Replacement Plan. Perform other related work as required.
Essential Job Functions
* Manage and evaluate subordinates, including but not limited to: Fleet Shift Supervisors, Material and Parts Supervisor, Fleet Services Coordinator, and Fleet Operations Analyst.
* Ensure city vehicles are maintained in a high state of readiness for use by city departments in accordance with City Management’s expectation and available funding.
* Manage a team environment that engages in overhaul service and repair of City automotive and industrial equipment and performs inventory/warehouse functions.
* Coordinate selection of personnel and recommend promotions as appropriate.
* Plan and implement in-service and outside training for subordinate personnel.
* Establish and maintain preventive maintenance program for vehicles and mechanical equipment.
* Establish and implement operating policies and procedures for Fleet Services and Materials Management.
* Coordinate activities of the Municipal Garage and Materials Management Warehouse with other City user departments.
* Prepare vehicle and equipment specifications.
* Prepare annual budget requests for Fleet Services and Materials Management.
* Manage the information system supporting fleet maintenance, assuring accuracy and adequacy of information received from it.
* Evaluate vehicles and equipment to assess need for replacement due to age, history of repairs, and overall maintenance costs.
* Perform forecasting and financial planning functions for the replacement of fleet vehicles and equipment.
* Exercise good judgment and resourcefulness in planning and accomplishing departmental objectives.
* Communicate courteously and effectively with upper-level City management, subordinate personnel, other City employees, vendors, and the public.
* Manage maintenance and use of Municipal Garage and fenced premises.
* Establish and maintain safety standards for operation.
* Establish and maintain standards of housekeeping for Fleet Services and Materials Management.
* Drive City and personal vehicles in performance of job functions.
Other Job Functions and Physical Capabilities
* May participate in some mechanical work to diagnose equipment malfunctions.
Required Education, Degrees, Certificates and/or Licenses
* Bachelor’s degree in Business or a related field. May substitute eight years progressively responsible managerial experience in fleet management for degree. Valid Texas Driver’s License, Class C, required.
Experience, Training, Knowledge, and Skills
* Five (5) years of experience required in writing vehicle and equipment specifications.
* Eight (8) years progressively responsible managerial required, preferably in a municipal environment.
* Must have ability to plan and direct activities of others; ability to delegate effectively and promote a team environment; general knowledge of regulations and statutes relative to municipal government.
