Here at P&O Ferries we are seeking a Vessel Controller to join our team in Hull on a permanent basis. This is an opportunity to work as part of the Port Operations team helping to ensure that our ships are loaded/unloaded in a safe and efficient manner, maximising capacity and fuel saving opportunities whilst delivering a high level of customer service. The successful candidate will have a proven record in port operations, following process and dealing with H&S related issues, ability to flex resources and have basic administration skills. The role is based in our Hull port, working a fixed shift pattern. Key responsibilities and duties: Effectively supervise vessel operations To ensure the highest level of safety and security is always achieved. To ensure all incidents, accidents, damage is correctly managed, reported and investigated in a timely manner and reported in DP World HSEAS application In conjunction with Training, H&S Co-Ordinator and PDMs, carry out regular H&S/operational audits and report via the DP World HSEAS application To support PDM’s in continually reviewing operations with a view to achieving continuous improvement to optimise efficiency and utilisation. Liaise with vessel officers regarding loading plans and segregation of hazardous freight/plug ins and vessel maintenance including vessel housekeeping i.e., lashing equipment in the appropriate areas To liaise closely with the Port Duty Managers and Freight Planners attending preloading meetings, to ensure the effective management of freight To ensure huddles are performed and any operational issues are communicated to staff To react and organise vessel labour changes at short notice, ensuring that competent staff are in appropriate positions Ensure that any issues arising during loading that has the potential to affect freight capacity are communicated to the Freight Planners and PDM’s in a timely manner so that they can be resolved (customers informed) Support the operation by ensuring all vessel staff are competent and trained to carry out their duties as required. Upon completion of vessel operations liaise with Port Duty Managers for any other terminal tasks that are required i.e. housekeeping before releasing staff Carry out such other duties as are consistent with the jobholder’s role and skills / capabilities as may, from time to time, be required by the company. To ensure the safety of self and others in line of carrying out duties Point of contact for any issue or requirement on vessel The ideal candidate will have: Demonstrated competence or knowledge in all port related duties i.e. Ro Ro Tractors, Reachstackers, Fork Lift, Ramp Control, Lashing, Mooring, Operation of plants and machinery. Effective knowledge of all P&O Ferries procedures including Safe Systems of work. Effective communication skills Basic IT skills The ability to work in an organised manner, keeping appropriate records. Working knowledge of P&O Ferries policies and procedures. The ability to effectively motivate teams of staff A full clean driving license And will be: Flexible, to meet the operational needs of the business Able to respond quickly to changing needs of the port operation Able to respond positively to instructions and able to meet strict deadlines Able to manage expectation, upwards and across peer group Desirable: IOSH Managing Safely Certification Location – Hull, this role operates on a split shift style, fixed shift pattern.
