We are seeking a highly experienced Principal Fire Engineer to provide enterprise-level fire engineering leadership across all ISS sectors, including Financial & Professional Services, Technology & Data Centres, Life Sciences, Manufacturing & Logistics, Aviation & Transport, Public Sector & Central Government, Retail, Education, and Healthcare.
Acting as the subject matter expert (SME) for fire strategy and safety guidance, you will ensure fire strategies are buildable, operable, and auditable across design, project delivery, and operational estates.
Job Description This is a senior, high-profile role requiring technical credibility, strategic influence, and the ability to translate complex regulations into practical operational guidance.
You will drive ISS’s Fire Strategy across 96 UK & Ireland Technical Accounts, create training and development pathways for internal teams, and influence stakeholders at all levels, from site engineers to executive boards.
The role also offers opportunities to represent ISS externally, network within industry bodies, and support business growth initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
* Author and sign-off Fire Strategies and Safety Guidance for new build, refurbishment, and operational estates.
* Ensure compliance with UK and international fire codes, regulations, and client-specific requirements.
* Maintain the golden thread of fire safety information and embed robust document control.
* Provide RIBA-stage design input, including evacuation strategies, smoke control, and suppression systems.
* Lead technical reviews, commissioning, and acceptance testing with supporting evidence packs.
* Translate fire strategy into operational controls and impairment management for FM and project teams.
* Oversee fire risk assessments, compartmentation surveys, fire door inspections, and critical action close-outs.
* Coach and mentor Fire Engineers and Technical Services Managers; develop structured training and playbooks.
* Influence senior stakeholders, including clients, insurers, Principal Designers/Contractors, and Fire & Rescue Services.
Professional and Personal Competencies/Qualifications
* Proven Principal or Lead Fire Engineer with experience across complex multi-sector estates.
* Deep knowledge of UK and international fire standards, including performance-based engineering.
* Skilled in converting strategy into operational, auditable controls.
* Strong technical writing, data analysis, and evidence-pack discipline.
* Exceptional communication and stakeholder influence at all levels.
* Experience coaching and developing technical teams.
* Experience leading multi-site programmes and using digital CDE/golden-thread tools.
* UK travel, occasional overnight stays, and client security clearance ability.
* Credible fire SME with client-facing and internal leadership experience.
