About the Role
The Sociology and Criminology Department at the University of Sussex is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor in Criminology (Education and Scholarship), for a part‑time, fixed‑term position.
Responsibilities include contributing to teaching criminology, delivering lectures, seminars, and dissertation supervision, supporting students, and engaging in marking and assessment.
About You
Qualifications: hold a PhD in Criminology or a related discipline; have previous experience teaching within a higher education setting; possess good communication skills and a demonstrable capacity for supporting students; be able to work productively as part of a friendly, team‑oriented department.
About Our School
The department is a well‑established, research‑led department with a record of excellence in research assessment and teaching. It employs 30 faculty and has around 450 students. It offers two master’s programmes in Gender Studies and Criminology, each recruiting 15‑20 students per year.
It has a diverse research culture, aims to push the boundaries of research and of research‑led teaching, and performed well in the last NSS, improving its scores in almost every category. Research assessment (UoA21, Sociology) was overall 45% ‘world leading’ (4*) and 40% ‘internationally excellent’ (3*); 100% of impact case studies were assessed as outstanding (4*).
