Key purpose The role of the Senior Clinical Author involves leading a small team who research, write, edit, and review medical information, including ongoing clinical education, internal team updates, and patient education materials for the purposes of the claimant, the Health Professionals (HP) in line with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Health Assessment Advisory Service (HAAS). Reason for the role Health Assessment Advisory Service (HAAS) is responsible for delivering assessments for Personal Independence Payments (PIP), Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Universal Credit (UC) as well as some Specialist Benefits (SB) for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). The Senior Clinical Author is responsible for the creation and maintenance of all clinical collateral within Serco HAAS Contract. Structure and reporting You will report to the Head of Clinical Development Key accountabilities The main responsibilities of a senior clinical author include: Manage a small team responsible for researching and reviewing medical literature to ensure that the organisation’s content is up-to-date, accurate, and credible. Leading the creation of, and editing scientific or medical content that is clear, concise, and easy to understand. Collaborating with HPs, DWP, and other internal and external stakeholders to ensure that training guidelines and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) courses are relevant and accurate to HAAS Adhering to regulatory and ethical guidelines when creating medical content. Ensuring that the content is written in a way that meets the needs of the audience, whether they are healthcare professionals, claimants, or the general public. Ensuring that the content is accessible to people with disabilities, such as those with visual impairments. · Staying up to date with the latest clinical and medical research and developments by reviewing DWP updates, NICE and SIGN guidelines. Collaborating with other HAAS providers, DWP, and other professionals to create and distribute content. Ensuring that the content meets Serco’s standards for quality, accuracy, and style. Conducting peer reviews and revising the content with audit and operational colleagues. Adapting content to changes in benefit Legislation or government reviews. Essential technical and professional skills Background A strong background in medical writing, along with knowledge of medical terminology, research methodologies, and regulatory guidelines. Previous experience working as a Clinical Author in a relevant field would be an advantage. This may include experience working in the disability assessment, pharmaceutical industry, healthcare communications, or medical publishing. The role requires: Ability to write clear, concise, and accurate content that is tailored to the needs of the target audience is essential. This includes the ability to explain complex medical concepts in a way that is easy to understand. Ability to research and analyse medical information from a variety of sources, including peer-reviewed journals, medical textbooks, and online databases. Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, internal staff, and the public. A keen eye for detail and accuracy. Additional features of the role An accredited HP within a FAS/HAAS benefit either Work Capacity Assessments (WCA) or Personal Independence Payments (PIP).
