Cardiff Bus have an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and driven individual to join their team as Head of Fleet Engineering. Reporting to the Managing Director you will lead the engineering function driving team performance and continuous improvement in the provision of a sufficient serviceable fleet to meet daily bus service requirements, compliant with all statutory legislation.The role will be based at their Cardiff Depot.
The role
In this senior-level role, you will be the linchpin of the engineering operation, ensuring that our fleet is maintained to the highest standard. You'll be responsible for a diverse team of dedicated, technicians, engineers, garage operatives, trimmers and body technicians, as well as have the responsibility for maintaining a well-stocked and organised stores. Key to your success will be the collaboration with the operations team to make sure that service delivery is maintained through our fleet maintenance programme.As one of three 'Transport Manager's' listed on our operator's license, you will need a Transport Manager Certificate of Professional Competence and ensure the business activities comply with all legal and safety standards set out by the traffic commissioner.
Key responsibilities include:
* Manage all servicing and testing of vehicles in accordance with legislation.
* Manage fleet maintenance and cleaning, both planned and un-planned, to ensure that operational, regulatory compliance and quality requirements are met.
* Responsible for the engineering budget, ensuring that the budgets and targets are consistently evaluated and variances reported.
* Manage the contracts and their renewals for equipment and replacements in the garage.
* Responsible for the security of the site and bad weather coverage in Engineering.
* Manage the ATF lane in compliance with VOSA requirements.
* Responsible for fleet disposal and supporting the Senior Leadership Team on fleet replacement programmes.
* Prioritise vehicle defect rectification, in consultation with your team allocating work and resources as required.
* Highlight and progress investigations on repeat defect occurrences, assist in identifying relevant solutions arrange training and communication on how to rectify faults.
* Implement ways of improving vehicle maintenance and workshop efficiency, communicating with the teams and encouraging them to take ownership and seek improvements in all activities, performance and processes.
What you need
You will have demonstrable previous experience in a senior, engineering management remit, preferably within transport with sound knowledge of PSV, PCV, Bus and Coach. Interpersonal skills are essential to succeed in this role; you will have excellent communication, influence, leadership and motivational skills, in addition to meticulous time management and planning, with the ability to make rational decisions under pressure.
