Overview

Software Engineering Coach (GenAI + LLMs)

We are looking for experienced lead engineers to lead targeted micro-workshops for small groups of software engineers. Sessions are up to 90 minutes, remote via our app, and based on high quality teaching material that we produce.

Your job is to bring expertise and enthusiasm for software engineering and ensure learners leave with a deep understanding of the topic (why, not just what or how), and the ability to apply new skills. You will teach senior and junior engineers, answer questions related to our material, and help learners improve results when using LLMs. The coaching role is more akin to pairing or technical mentoring than traditional classroom teaching.

About Skiller Whale

Skiller Whale enables tech teams to achieve more through live sessions led by subject-matter experts. Developers attend 60-90 minute sessions weekly or biweekly, learning through challenging exercises with an expert guiding the discussion. Learners rate us highly (average 4.8/5), and we measure a real impact on teams.

Examples from learners include real-time feedback loops, the ability to ask any questions, and deep knowledge demonstrated by coaches on topics such as Python internals and system architecture.

What We’re Looking For

We’d love for you to apply if you enjoy building the skills and understanding of others, and have experience with most (at least 4) of the following:

* Explaining basic machine learning concepts to others
* Knowledge of LLM internals (e.g., transformer building blocks) to underpin deeper understanding
* Prompt engineering
* Agentic AI and IDE integrations with AI agents
* Coding with LLMs (e.g., Cursor/Copilot configs, writing prompts for coding/debugging)
* Integrating/pipelining with LLMs (e.g., LangChain)
* Customising LLM tools (e.g., fine tuning, RAG systems)

You should have significant real-world expertise, be able to answer nuanced questions, and explain advanced concepts clearly and succinctly. An outline of the first modules is available at the provided URL.

Working Details

Working Hours: Most coaches lead 1–4 sessions per week (1.5–6 hours total). We typically book regular 90-minute time slots based on your availability.

The Platform: All teaching is done through the Skiller Whale platform, which includes video conferencing and other tooling. High-quality written content and exercises are provided; you should not need substantial preparation beyond ½–1 hour to review material. We pay for preparation the first time a module is taught.

Accommodations: If you require accommodations during the interview process, contact Dave Millican (dave@skillerwhale.com).

Requirements

We want to be seen as intelligent, playful learners. To coach effectively, you should demonstrate:

* Knowledge & Understanding: Be an expert who can expand beyond provided material with real-world examples.
* Careful Listening and Clear Explanations: Deliver clear, concise explanations in spoken English and adapt to the audience’s level.
* Expert Spoken and Written English: Fluent, clear, and able to understand complex questions with or without clarification.
* A Personable, Passionate and Professional Demeanour: Build rapport, create a safe learning space, and maintain professionalism.
* Industry Experience: Extensive real-world experience and the ability to discuss practical approaches.
* Teaching or Mentoring Experience (formal or informal): Experience teaching groups or mentoring developers is beneficial.
* Bonus: Experience with multiple languages/frameworks/tools; useful context for learners from diverse backgrounds.

Note: An outline of the first modules and more details are available via the Skiller Whale site.

Benefits

* Rate: £100 per hour (+ £50 preparation per new module)
* Very flexible work – no ongoing commitment
* Fully remote
* Have a real impact on learners
* Teaching is fun

* Seniority level: Mid-Senior level
* Employment type: Contract
* Job function: Training
