We are seeking a compassionate and proactive School Nurse (term time) to support the health and wellbeing of pupils in our vibrant day and boarding school.
The Role
You will deliver high-quality medical care, including triage, treatment, and emergency response, while promoting a culture of wellbeing across the school. The role involves supporting pupils with ongoing medical needs, maintaining accurate records, administering medication, and working closely with staff, parents, and boarding teams.
You will also contribute to health education, provide First Aid at school events, and ensure compliance with safeguarding and health & safety procedures.

Responsible to: The Bursar
Overview
This is an important position within Brighton College Prep Handcross, to contribute to the development of health services at the school in partnership with the Boarding team, pupils, their families and school staff. The role demands a commitment to the overall pastoral care and well‑being of our pupils, together with energy, enthusiasm and the willingness to go the extra mile.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
* To lead a nursing team to ensure there is cover as necessary in the Surgery.
* To act at all times within the Nursing and Midwifery Code of Professional Conduct.
* Work independently and autonomously to undertake nursing care of pupils presenting at the Surgery and providing clinical care to anyone in need on school premises.
* Undertaking the triage, diagnosis, treatment and/or referral of injuries and illnesses in accordance with agreed protocols.
* To ensure the best possible medical care is available to pupils/staff on an immediate or an emergency care basis.
* Where necessary, arranging to get the pupil home safely or to alternative care, for example to hospital.
* Providing nursing advice to the Boarding House and School staff as requested.
* To be aware of, and implement, routine procedures as outlined in the School Policies.
* Detailed knowledge of and adherence to Child Protection Protocols within the School, discussing any concerns with the Designated safeguarding Lead with adherence to Local Authority Child Protection Procedures.
* Providing First Aid cover for and during Sporting Events, as and when required to do so, in liaison with the Games Team.
* Acting as one of the School’s designated First Aiders under H&S legislation to ensure medical supplies are maintained in date and in specified quantities.
* To ensure First Aid resources are audited and replenished as necessary, ensuring they are compliant with current legislation.
* To ensure the defibrillator devices are checked regularly and in working order.
* To assist pupils to manage their long‑term conditions and complex needs e.g. anaphylaxis, diabetes, asthma, seizures, eczema.
* To assist with the intimate care of pupils.
* Work in an integrated way with other school services, focusing on and advocating for the needs of the pupil.
* To create and/or implement existing care plans for pupils with specific health care needs and to support and monitor non‑qualified staff in the safe and effective delivery thereof.
* Documenting accurately all consultations and communications regarding pupils, staff and visitors.
* Adherence to the NMC Code of Practice requirements on confidentiality, data protection and information sharing, adhering to the (NHS) Caldicott Principles requirements of the Data Protection Act and the Human Rights Act. Ensuring the maintenance of confidentiality at all times.
* To communicate as appropriate (in the confines of confidentiality) with parents and those who have care of pupils including Class Teachers, Nursery Staff, Tutors, HOD’s of Lower, Middle & Upper School, Catering Department & Heads of Department.
* To maintain the school’s accident log and liaise with the Bursar to ensure RIDDOR reports are filed.
* To maintain the Near Miss Log and follow up remedial measures.
* Timely maintenance of pupil files, medical records and medical room attendance records.
* Ensuring the safe storage, usage, administration and disposal of medicines according to NMS guidelines, and maintaining appropriate records as necessary.
* Promoting Health Education throughout the School and on an individual basis, by providing access, advice and support on health and issues that impact health to pupils, parents and staff.
* To assist in the delivery of health education topics to support the school’s PSHE programme.
* To deliver INSET to staff as and when necessary.
* Co-ordinate the annual flu clinic for pupils and staff.
* Attend and report to the termly Health & Safety Committee.
* Attending training courses, as and when required, and Inset days, in order to meet the CPD and Revalidation requirements for Registered Nurses as set by the NMC.
* To provide medical risk assessment for pupils going on daily/residential trips.
* To provide First Aid packs as appropriate for each trip.
* For pupils with specific health care requirements; to communicate with parents and teachers to ensure that all medical needs are catered for and necessary medication provided.
* To co-ordinate with the catering manager on a timely basis, pupil allergies and medical dietary requirements.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
* To share any specific areas of expertise which would be beneficial towards the running or development of the school.
* To be an active member of the staff room.
* To attend whole school staff meetings and INSET training days (as appropriate, in order to be kept up-to-date with current support and training) as required by the Headmaster/Bursar.
* To carry out such other duties as are reasonably assigned by the Head of Pre-Prep and Bursar.
